Title: Endings Lead To Beginnings

Summary: He sits down beside her and hands her a flask. “It’ll help,” he tells her.

The night John Gilbert leaves Mystic Falls (the first time), Jenna is little more than sixteen, and she had just told him not but a week ago that she thought she might be in love with him.
“John Gilbert is a complete jackass,” Mason says, coming to her spot behind the school bleachers.
He sits down beside her and hands her a flask. “It’ll help,” he tells her.
She has never had a drink of alcohol before that day, and she doesn’t really believe him, but she takes the flask anyway and takes a hesitant swig.
She ends up coughing and spitting it all back up and Mason sits there laughing at her.
“It isn’t funny!” Jenna exclaims, crossing her arms over her chest defensively.
Mason takes the flask back and takes a swig expertly. “No, I suppose it isn’t.”
For the next hour and a half after the football game Jenna will always remember as the one that made her cry and the one that opened the gateway to all her risky behaviors, Mason instructs Jenna on the fine points of liquor and weed and while Jenna tries none of it again that night, she makes him promise to really show her some other time.
“There’s a whole world of things I can teach you, Jenna Sommers,” Mason whispers against her lips as he drops her off at her house.
And neither is truly surprised when she takes him up on his offer.

When he doesn’t move, she’ll slowly untangle and edge herself out of his green and silver sheets.
She’ll find her discarded clothes-magically mending those that he had ripped-and her hand will be on the door.
She’ll look back. His eyes will be open and he’ll smirk at her.
Friends with benefits, he called it once. But they were never really friends. So, what are they?

She never speaks. Not when she’s with him, anyway.
He’ll see her later, joking with the other annoying Gryffindors, but when she’s with him, she never speaks.
He tells himself it’s because their arrangement is merely that-an arrangement-and not a relationship. He tells himself it’s because he’ll never pay her back in kind. But the entire time he spends dwelling on her silence, he purposely ignores the truth.
Because he knows. Of course he knows.
She doesn’t speak because it’s him. A Slytherin. And she can’t let him win.
Because in the game they’re playing, silence is golden.

She hates herself for bringing Emmett into the picture, and she wishes she could selflessly take back that selfish act. Even if that means she’d spend eternity alone.
Because meant to be is a tall order, and she’s not convinced she can measure up.

“Don’t look at me like that,” she says, moving slightly away from him.
He pulls her back. “Like what?” he asks, furrowing his eyebrows.
“Like I’m your savior or something,” she whispers. “I’m not.”
“You’re everything, Sookie,” he ends the discussion. She blushes, but doesn’t object.

If only I was a princess, she found herself thinking as she sighed, and took a sip of her martini. But princesses don’t hang out in bars, and princesses don’t get drunk, and princesses especially don’t cheat on their boyfriends.
Technically, Maxie wasn’t cheating-physically, anyway. Emotionally, on the other hand, she had practically already broken up with Spinelli. And she hated herself for it, because it’s all wrong.
Johnny Zacchara is no prince, and she’ll never be part of a fairytale.
