I spent the day doing yard work again. Pretty much, my old lady takes the front yard, and I do the back. She like to keep it as shorn as possible, edged, very prim and proper little garden area. The typical front yard.
The back yard was an absolute disaster when we moved here. I'll post some pictures here soon, and you can just turn the grass in to tinder, add in 4ft tall weeds and desert plants, and expand the bare areas by about 75%, and thats what it was.
I forgot my sunblock, and wooo boy! I can feel every breeze across that super sensitive burn I got today. Of course my girls have to play with Daddy and grab, scratch, hit, yank on the collar of my shirt. Murphy's law I guess. and yes it is BRIGHT red. I've seen fire trucks with a less vibrant shade, and that includes when they have the lights on.
The odd thing about today was I went sans music. No radio, no headphones. I didnt mean to, just sort of happened. I remember the sound of the shovel sliding past the surface of the dirt, a sort of clean, scouring penetration. The weedeater, how there was a steady rhythm as I moved across the yard, broken by the occasional large rock, or exceptionaly sturdy weed stalk. The thunk of boards as they were moved for preperation of the main shade structure, just a huge scope of sounds that I normally dont hear. Or at least haven't in a long while.
I was hurt at work a few years back, lost a ligament, one that kept my mid-carpals in place correctly, and also, smashed my lunate pretty good. I pay 2-1 for every hour of work I do most days. I used to do body work, solid surface fabrication, and was doing some entry level diesel work.(Read-Lube monkey, basic safety inspection, fluids, filters, brakes when the boss was feeling generous.) I loved all these jobs. The solid surface was probably my favorite, but it doesnt pay well at all any more. Standards have gone down from the buyers, and the level of competition means that most shops want the least paid workers they can find, as long as they can hack out some semblance of a product. Body work, well, I was average, but in that business, you need to be damned good. probably one of the most demanding jobs I have ever had.
But thats all over. With a weight limit of about 10 lbs max,and a total restriction from any power tool coming in contact with the injured hand, kind of puts a dent in to 10 years of job skills. I've tried power tools, it's not pretty. The old lady thinks it's funny to crack jokes about the fact that I can barely turn a screwdriver. I just think she's a mean spirited bitch.
But there's school to look forward to. Wont be working with my hands any more I hope. I get to be one of the guys I really didnt like. I'm hoping I'll do a bit better in the fields I've chosen, as I have a real personal interest in them, and have actually done the work. Most of the guys in management I didnt like because I never saw dirt on their hands, and even when I was green as hell, I did'nt have to be spoon-fed the reasons for why we did things the way we did. I'm sure some new guys gonna have the same gripes about me as I did coming up.
I just hope there's not a Union.
