Stacy can't believe it. She can't wrap her mind around it. It sounds like one of House's better pranks, it's so well-concocted.
"Is everyone in on this, or just you and House?" she asks.
Cuddy sighs, and Stacy can imagine the look on her face as well as if they were standing across from each other. "It's not a prank."
"House and James, getting married? And you're pregnant, but you've decided to let them raise the baby? Lisa, please, do me a favor and tell me this is a joke; otherwise, I'll be forced to come down there and beat some sense into you."
Silence from the other end of the line, nothing but the crackling of static in between them. After a while, Cuddy starts talking again, and Stacy can tell that she's been crying.
"Oh god, you're serious," is all she can say. She stays on the phone, but her jaw is slack with shock and her fingers are shaking.
Minutes pass, and Mark enters the room, asking her a question about something or another. She finds herself unable to reconcile the two realities of her past and present life, and before she realizes what she's doing, she's already hung up the phone.
"Who was that?" Mark asks, sliding his arms around her middle, blowing gently on her nape.
She shivers, suddenly cold, and it has nothing to do with her husband's breath on her neck. "Nothing," she says hastily. "No one."
Stacy has many regrets. Not marrying House is not one of them. Not giving him a child isn't one either.
That doesn't make the whole stupid situation a bit easier to stomach.
