This isn't nearly enough.

Today, our dog Lucy was hit by a car and killed on her walk. Some of you may read that and think “It’s just a stupid dog, get over it.” But while Lucy was undoubtedly one of the stupidest dogs I’ve ever met, she was special to us, so please bear with me.

Lucy was the first pet bigger than a beta fish that my brother and I ever had. The daughter of our grandma’s friend found her starving to death by a baseball field. She was a verifiable mutt of the Blue Heeler/Jack Russell Terrier variety, which meant she was smart, but only smart in the sense that “no” meant “yes” and “down” meant “aren’t you just the best dog in the world?” She would have been with us two years this April.

Look at that. Is that not cute? Maybe not to you, but to us she was adorable. We called her our “misshapen dog,” because her ribcage was too big, her butt was too small, and her tale was stubby and off-center. She loved to run, and play, and bark at the door like an idiot. She loved to chase squirrels. She ate more human food than dog food. We spoiled her rotten.

Why do people get attached to their pets? I don’t know, but I can say for certain that we loved Lucy, and she loved us back. You’ll be missed around here, Luce. Leave the heaven-squirrels alone, please.

death, life, lucy
