I don't know about the rest of the world, but in the UK there are a whole load of websites available that will enable you to compare the prices of things. Mostly, they are used for comparing car insurance quotes.
Now, however, an increasing number of insurance companies are boasting in their adverts "We aren't on price comparison websites". Now, I understand why the insurance companies are doing it: I phoned one of them for a quote, which they gave me over the phone and then asked me for credit card details so I could pay for the policy. I asked them to put the quote in writing so I could compare it and they refused, so I hung up!
Now, with such a vast and growing number of price comparison sites (there's even one that claims to compare the comparison sites), I sincerely hope that more people are going to be saying to themselves "If they aren't on the price comparison sites, it must be because they don't want to be compared, and the only reason for that must be because they won't compare favourably..."
