Found a job-search site yesterday, and registered. Applied for a few of the jobs they had...
Then this morning I get the following email...
Home Business Opportunity
Dear Simon Jackson
I am responding to your CV posting on careerbuilder.co.uk and would like to make you aware of a home-based business opportunity with our company, which now operates in 64 countries around the World and has been trading successfully for over 27 years in one of the World's fastest growing industries.
You have been selected, as we believe you possess the necessary skills needed to start and run your own home business around your existing schedule/family. For this reason, the business opportunity outlined below may be of interest to you.
This proposal is probably different to what you expected to receive when you posted your CV on careerbuilder.co.uk . You would be working your own business, from home, around your existing schedule. You would earn an income commensurate with what you produce and not what a traditional corporate structure, politics or your educational background dictates. The OTE is £500-£1,500 per month part time and £5,000+ per month full time.
The advantages to this system are numerous:-
- You can eliminate the cost and time wasted by commuting
- You can spend more time with your family
- Your income is not limited
- You can potentially work fewer hours for more money
With our business opportunity, you don't answer to a boss in a traditional corporate structure, but only to yourself. If you want to earn more, you can, simply by putting in more time and effort. You are in complete control of your earning potential and the days and hours your work.
All you need is a computer with an internet connection, and to be hard working, teachable and able to read and speak English. We will show you step by step how to make extra money.
In spite of everything I have said above, this business opportunity, which is completely genuine, may not be appropriate for you and for this reason if you have no interest there is no further action to take.
If, however, you are seriously looking for the chance to change your life completely then reply to me on the above e-mail address and I will provide you with the details required for you to fully research our offer.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Best regards
Katie Crabtree
Now, to me, that looks awfully suspicious! See, in the last job I did, we offered the kids the opportunity to earn £300 or more PW OTE (On Target Earnings), but most of them struggled to earn as much as £100pw. The reason being, we told them all the up-side of the job, all about how to earn the money, but we didn't tell them how hard it was, nor what happened if they failed to hit their target, nor the fact that even if they did get 36 leads per week, that "national conversion rate of 1 in 3" was on leads contacted, not leads written.
In other words, you could write 36 leads, and expect to get 12 appointments and a cheque for £290, but in fact you would get 3 appointments and a cheque for £100, because they'd only contacted 9 of your leads. And if just 2 of those 9 leads were out of criteria for whatever reason, your money dropped to £45.
However, I must say, the opportunity to work from home does look good. I'm sceptical, but willing to give it a shot. It's bound to be some sort of sales thing. As long as I don't have to put out anything up-front, and they tell me EVERYTHING before I make a decision, I'm willing to listen to what they have to say.
[EDIT] A google search for the name "Katie Crabtree" turned up the following website:
http://www.feelgoodfactor-y.com/. The hotmail address on the bottom of the page is the same one I sent my reply to, ergo this is the same person. I'm guessing that this is some sort of pyramid marketing thing... I'll wait and see.[/EDIT]
So I sent this as a reply:
Dear Katie
Thank you for the email. While I am interested in you proposition, I'm sure you understand that I would like a lot more information before committing myself to anything. "Get rich quick" schemes are two-a penny, and always have some catch involved, nothing in life is free, and anything worth having must be worked for.
Equally, I am naturally sceptical of large amounts of money with "OTE" attached to them: In my most recent job, we offered new employees the chance to earn £300pw OTE or more, but most rarely achieved even £100 pw.
I am therefore understandably sceptical of this offer, as you give very little detail of what is involved. Before I commit myself to anything I require a FULL disclosure of exactly what is involved in the job. I am, however, interested.
Thank you, once again, for contacting me, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely
Simon
We shall see what transpires...
