I was killing some time (sort-of) by reading through some of my old LJ entries. As well as some really controversial rants, and some quite silly random posts, I discovered
this one. It details how the hot water heater in my old flat broke and was repaired...
Well, I just thought I'd randomly post something about the water heater in my house.
Firstly, it's not electric, it's gas. That means it is actually slightly cheaper to run, and is much more controllable. It also heats not just the hot water, but the radiators too. Yes, I have gas central heating! The heating is controlled by two separate thermostats. The first one is on the boiler itself and regulates the temperature of the water within the pipes. The second is on a wall in a different room to the boiler and regulates the temperature of the air in the room. If the room temperature falls, it sends a radio signal to the boiler which then turns on and starts pumping hot water around the system.
But best of all is the hot water system itself. This supplies hot water to three taps (One in the bath, one in the bathroom sink and the third in the kitchen sink). The Bath tap can also be switched to the shower. But the hot water supply is set to a constant 56°c and is ON DEMAND! In other words, there is no hot water tank. If I turn a hot tap on, the boiler fires up and instantly heats the water to scaldingly hot! Obviously, this requires judicious use of the cold water taps too...
BUT, it means I can have a shower as hot as I want, whenever I want, for as long as I want and STILL have hot water to wash up in!
