It was any time before the year 2000 and the bet was placed around 2002 upon an eartquake of Richter scale 6 or higher hitting Japan (extra points if tokyo was levelled). At one point you were most insistant that the untimely demise of two elderly Japanese fisherman off the southern tip of the Kyusyu province meant that you'd won. I still say stuff and nonesense! If they didn't kark it on the mainland then it doesn't count! So pay up, wideboy! :)
I'm guessing the bet was placed in 1992, not 2002 (or it was a rather stupid bet).
you say the bet was 'scale 6 or higher hitting Japan'... How about >>In January 1995 a strong earthquake hit the city of Kobe and surroundings. The Southern Hyogo Earthquake (also called Great Hanshin Earthquake) killed 6,000 and injured 415,000 people. 100,000 houses were completely and 185,000 partially destroyed
Hmmm, now this is all a tad strange. I was in Bristol at this time and I am damn sure that you'd have had a merry old time pointing out that your projection of untold misery and death in Japan was right on the noggin. I'm fairly sure we bet on a force 7 and not a force 6, by the way, but even so it's rather remiss of us both to miss such an earth shattering event. Either way, looks like I owe you a couple of pints. Sorry I brought it up now. :P
I had left Bristol by 1995. I'm not sure I've seen you much since.
And I'd forgotten about the bet completely.
If it's any consolation, this isn't what I meant by a big Tokyo earthquake and that is probably still on the cards. But I can't remember the words of the bet as to whether Kobe fits into the actual bet definition.
Talking of tests, disasters and all that sort of thing, you still owe me a tenner for the lack of a fatal earthquake in Japan!

Don't remember making that bet.
But it does sound like something I'd do.
What year did we make as the cutoff date?
