It's late evening, after dinner, when Simon goes to talk to River. He finds Kaylee first, as promised.

"Meimei?" he calls softly, sliding open the door to her room.

River is on her bed, crosslegged. In her hands is a purple beret festooned with pompoms, a New Year's gift from Mal a few years back. She's studying it curiously.

"I'm counting the threads," she informs Simon, without looking up.

[gonna_live]

Kaylee, behind him: "You got a second, River?"

[river_meimei]

"Lots."

Beat.

Either the penny drops, or she finishes whatever private communion she's having with the magical hat: she glances up.

[simon_doctor]

Gently: "There's something we have to talk with you about."

He steps into the room and aside, to give Kaylee space to follow him in, and comes to sit on the edge of the bed next to River.
