We made it

It took six bodies, one very large truck, and a full day, but we got everything into the house. Complete chaos now. We're drowning in boxes.

Turns out the dryer doesn't work. The seller bought a home warranty, which we were thinking of exercising. But my habit of complaining to anyone about anything paid off. A coworker overheard my dryer plight and mentioned that his washer conked out, so he bought a new W/D set. And he needs to get rid of his old dryer. All for a lousy fifty beans. We'll probably get it tonight.

Meanwhile, today is my first day back at work. On the way out this morning, the garage door wouldn't open. Apparently we tripped the breaker, but couldn't find the damned thing to reset it. A trained monkey somehow wired the garage power to a GFCI on a light switch in the downstairs bathroom. Doinks. Finally figured out how to reset it and I made it to work only 10 minutes late.

We still haven't nailed down the source of the smell downstairs. It's fine if the windows are open and a fan is on, but close it up and.... pee-yew! dumpsterboy thinks it's coming from the intake vent, which perhaps has a leak and is letting in damp, stinky air from the storage room. Guess we'll have to look into that.

And we finally figured out why exactly everyone hates Comcast. Since we don't get DSL up here, we're transferring dumpsterboy's Comcast† account over to the house. He called two weeks ago to make sure it was possible ("Sure! Just call us after you move!"), then the tech came out, then he called them again later that night, then spent an hour and a half on the phone with them (most of it on hold) yesterday, and they STILL can't figure out how to get the cable modem to work. This is not rocket science. All he did was move. Another tech is coming out tomorrow. Maybe someday we'll have our internet.

On the other hand, getting the phone service transferred was a breeze. Even though we changed exchanges, dropped the DSL service, changed the name on the account, and had the additional complication of moving into a house with five (yes, you read that right, five) installed phone lines. Two lousy phone calls and about thirty minutes was all it took to get it all done. Cheers to SBC.

Someday I will find out exactly who it is who sold my mortgage information to every lender and every home improvement company on the planet. Then I will hunt them down and pull out their fingernails. 95% of the mail at the new address is solicitations for refinancing and new window treatments.

† ObNonLocal: Comcast is the local cable TV/internet conglomerate.
