Having been around for many years before the computer, I view the internet as a tool for enhancing my relationships.
I have some dear friends who chose to not have computers and so we cannot email to keep in touch. Snail mail, phone calls have to do the job.
I did online distance education for college in my later years and loved it. I could focus and work at my own pace. I also enjoyed the two mandatory weeks when we attended in person. It was a nice interchange but I did not form any lasting friendships from that experience. I could have. I just was not in the space then for doing so.
LJ Idol has given me the opportunity to get to know people through their writing and our comments in a way I would never have dreamed about. It's a learning curve for me. I see it as all good and I have to establish my own levels of comfort in sharing and becoming involved or not.
I do have concerns for the newer generations because the technology/communication is so prevalent. It is very important to continue to build and maintain social skills for dealing with humans face to face.
