The Impossible Mission

I'm officially declaring my insanity in signing up to, yet again, compete in LJ Idol. Are my fingers up to it? I'll be typing the sprints and getting the ice packs ready because once Gary posts the first topic, all bets are off and you better just keep running ( Read more... )

I'll have to run hard to keep up with you. I can't wait to see what you write this time. Honestly, that is often my favorite part: reading everyone else:)

Do you run? I have several friends who do and reading their FB posts make me feel like an awful slacker. College keeps me "chained" to my computer (it feels like.)

I'm just wondering what the topics will be. Sometimes it seems (to me) like each season gets harder...

I would run if my knees were in better shape. I did a half-marathon in San Fran walk in 2008 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. That was great, but it also ensured that I won't be doing any more marathons anytime soon...! Least not without knee surgery. And I'm not even thirty yet. Lame, huh? (Literally!)

I do walk to work everyday, though. :) Whereabouts do you attend college? And what's your major?

I'm majoring in Secondary English Education. I attend Athens State (in a town near where I live)

Hrm---secondary English as in English at the secondary (high school) level, or secondary English as in English as a secondary language?

I wanted to be an English teacher when I first got to college. I also wanted to teach high school German. Seven years later... wow, I've really lost sight of all that! It would be fun, though. Maybe one of these days I'll get my teaching credential. :)

Well, this isn't my first chosen major either but I do think it is the one I will be best at (I hope, but then again, I am ending this sentence rather awkwardly.)

Yes, I will be certified to teach Language Arts/English to 7th-12th graders (once I graduate, pass the tests, and get certified.)

I probably should already know but where do you work? I wish I could walk to class each day (it's a 1 hour drive) or even just walk to the store. Around here, the distances require a car, for the most part.

Nah, no reason to know, since I've hardly talked about that part of my life on LJ. I work at a small synagogue as the front desk lady. I'm not Jewish, though--am a rebel Roman Catholic. It's ten minutes to the train, eight minutes on the tracks, and another eight minutes on foot to work. Sushi and Starbucks are on the way, too. It's a pretty sweet deal. :)

I guess the only worry is if it rains but with a good umbrella, it's probably still tolerable.

The only time I've lived near public transportation was in Europe. I enjoyed that option but it doesn't seem to catch on in many states unless it's a large city.

So (pardon my ignorance) are synagogues open through the week? Are you like a church secretary or more like a receptionist? Sounds like a fun job if you like people contact:) Do you meet interesting strangers here and there or is it mainly people who come regularily? (yes, I am nosy so answering is always optional:)

It's very much like a church--we have office hours in the afternoon, and some services in the early morning and evening, depending on the day. Officially my title is "office manager" and "rabbi's assistant," so I answer the phone, pick up the mail, process payments, prepare for events on the calendar, manage the rabbi's schedule, blah blah blah. We have visitors if there's an event coming up and we have kids around for various levels of Hebrew school now that the school-year is on again, but otherwise it's pretty quiet. :)
