I love writing to my representatives and designated public servants.
I took it another step the other day and participated in a protest! Believe you, me: It feels downright empowering to stand on public land with a big-ass sign and strike up conversations with passers by. It feels downright American, in the really, really good way.
I agree with rossja above, and I highly recommend reading the book The Underground History of American Education (see link below), recommended to me by a coworker who home-schooled their kids (his wife is a certified teacher, so they are not the typical home schoolers). It is a phenomenal book, and interestingly, my best friend is a high school teacher that went to Eastern, and said that it is a complete 180 from what she was taught in her degree program there

Oh, and I totally agree on the Hillary thing. As much as I'd love to finally see a woman in the White House (even as VP), I don't think she would help the campaign (or rather, I think her presence on the ticket would cause more ammunition than not) or the possible administration. I would much rather see him pick John Edwards, or maybe even Bill Richardson. Okay, I'll be honest, I'd be giddy with joy if he picked Nader, but I know in the Real World that that wouldn't happen.
