Attache brand memory sticks from PNY Technologies suck ass.
Yes, folks, the 1 GB memory stick I spent $120 on (and damn have the prices ever dropped in the past year!) is now officially toast. It wasn't the washing machine that killed it, nor even the dryer, but rather the crappy casing it came in. That purple casing doesn't hold it in place very well. Never really did. But recently something broke within the casing, the one tiny little piece that keeps the USB end sticking out... so when I push it into a USB port it now just retreats into the purple casing, not making any kind of connection. I tried removing it from the casing entirely, and did so successfully, but now the USB port doesn't even recognize that there's anything plugged in. Of course, to remove it from its casing I had to use a hammer, so this isn't too surprising of a result, but since I couldn't read the data anyhow it's not much of a further loss. From which we see that bad packaging is at least as bad a design flaw as forgetting I/O ports, because it can have the same result.
The up side (such as it is) is that if anyone wants to see the inner workings of a USB drive I've got a de-skinned one sitting on my computer table.
I guess I'll be going into the office today after all, since without a copy of my SHINE poster it's going to be a little hard writing the paper.
