Discussion: Those Milestone Moments

Sep 01, 2011 09:28

Sorry that this is a few hours late. Yesterday was a travel/organization day for me, and by the end I just crashed :S

In our culture, certain events are treated as milestones--important steps in the process of growing up. Birthdays. Weddings. Graduations. First kisses, first times, first loves. First heartbreak. First jobs. Naturally, characters experience these too, but writing them in a way that avoids the cliched can be a difficult task. How do you handle a milestone in a character's life? Does it have to be unconventional, or do the cliches exist for a reason? How do you make something special to begin with even more special without seeming over-the-top?
