“Ding dong,” rang the bell inside Kyle's apartment.
He shifted on the couch where he slept. When he peeked out, the blinding afternoon sun blinded him and he quickly closed his eyes to block it.
“Come on, Kyle! Open the door!” Ali hollered outside as she pushed the doorbell continuously.
“Ugh,” Kyle gasped.
He did not want to get up. He didn't even want to open his eyes. But the persistence of the doorbell made his head ache.
“Fine, fine!” He hollered out.
He stood up and made his way to the front door.
“Hold on,”
He heard Ali's voice from outside, “Your still sleeping? Come on, sleepy head, let us in!”
Kyle opened the door to a very excited Ali.
“Oh my god, Kyle,” Ali ran inside the house with Kit behind her, “So what happened? Tell us everything! Did you guys get along...” she gasped in hysteria, “Did you kiss?”
Kyle stomped his foot on the floor, an angry look present on his face.
“How many times do I have to tell you, I'm not gay!” He demanded.
“Ah, but he did stay here last night, right?” Kit wondered as she walked around Ali.
“How did you know that?” Kyle wondered.
A chuckle escaped Ali's lips but Kit remained silent for a moment.
“Because... look I'm sorry, this was all Ali's idea, I swear,” she finally said.
Kyle held his palm to his temple, “What Kit?”
“Well...”
“Harley is Kit's step-brother,” Ali interrupted.
“Ali!” Kit hissed.
“Wait... that was... wasn't his name...” Kyle turned to Kit, “I haven't seen him since we were kids. Didn't your mom and step-dad divorce?”
“Yeah, well, he left her for another woman. I haven't seen him in forever either until about two weeks ago. Changed his name to Harley and bam, he was gay.” Kit said.
Kyle shook his head in disbelief, “That makes sense. His dad was always a real jerk.”
“Oh my god, this is just too funny,” Ali laughed.
“Shut up, Ali. Hey Kyle, I just thought I'd try you know,” Kit said. “And after talking to Harley about it, he remembered you and wondered how you were doing... so... forgive me?”
Kyle remained silent.
This made sense. He knew Harley's dad as one real asshole who yelled at the poor kid for what seemed like nothing. But, he never knew that was the reason.
“I guess,” Kyle sighed.
Kit smiled and walked around to grab hold of her lover's arm to pull her away.
“So when are you two hooking up again?” Ali wondered happily.
“Ali!” both Kit and Kyle rattled.
“Let's leave him, Ali.” Kit persisted. “Come on.”
After the two girls left, Kyle made his way back to the couch. His mind reeling in on everything... and that kiss this morning.
That wonderful, exciting kiss that left him in shock, a pleasant sting that he couldn't forget.
Should he call him?
No...
…. maybe....
“Hello?”
“Hey, erm... Harley,” Kyle said over the phone. “Is it too early to call?”
“Uh, no. I'm just waking up,” Harley answered, trying to mask the delight from his voice. “I.. didn't think I'd hear from you again.”
“Really?” Kyle said. “Why is that?”
“Well, I don't know if you heard from Kit yet, but...” Harley began.
“Oh, yeah,” Kyle interrupted. “They just stopped by.”
“Oh... well, I just hope you don't hold me responsible for this,” Harley said. “It was all their idea... well mainly Ali's. I just can't believe you didn't recognize me.”
“No...” Kyle hesitated, “I don't blame you... I just...” another unnerving pause to clear his throat, “Wow, this is more awkward than last night.”
“Oh, well, I guess you're calling because...” Harley started.
“That kiss!” Kyle spouted before he could stop himself.
“I mean, I just wanted to say that, I have the answer to your question.” Kyle said.
“I told you I already know the answer,” Harley said.
“Yeah, but... I thought I'd tell you anyway,”
Harley was silent on the other end, but Kyle heard rustling in the background.
“Okay then... so...” Harley finally said. “Did you like it?”
Kyle hugged himself tight, ready to admit to Harley and himself “yes”, the word came out a relieving sigh.
“Good,” Harley said with a chuckle. “I figured that.”
“Yeah,” Kyle sighed. He felt good. Though he did not know what to say next.
An awkward pause followed. Both men listening closely at each other's breathing. Kyle yawned, still feeling drowsy.
“Should I let you get more sleep?” Harley wondered.
“No! I'm okay,” Kyle straightened his spine and sat up straight. “Umm, what I want to ask is... think you'd want to go do something sometime... with me?”
“Sure,” Harley answered. “What did you have in mind?”
