So today, the big whigs from above deem that our store's info termals (one in religion, art, and kid's) and office terminals (back office/manager's office) will be replaced with fancy new hard drives and flat screen monitors.
Also the server in our store will get a memory upgrade.
So what began as a "45 minute process -- at the most" (quoting the support services techie guy who was there) starting at 7 a.m. was still taking place when I left at 1p.m.
We opened the store with the registers and terminals off-line. Of course with me being the opening cashier, things like using gift cards to pay for merchandise took eons, as the register promted you to call this 1-800 number and get an approval code (as the register could not contact the server and all of the big bad B&N information to check GC balances). At one point all of the register went down, and I had to ring up one guy, by filling out a sales slip, and using a claculator (aka the crash kit). Thnakfully the registers came back up right after him -- still offline though).
All in all it WAS a pretty easy morning. Since we couldn't access Bookmaster, it saved us from having to look up books for cutomers. And you know how that goes...."Excuse me, an you look up a title or two for me" "Sure" Customer pulls out list of half baked titles without authors. So my day was strictly cashiering and playing with money.
AT 11:30 we went back on-line (yipee!) and my till was not even off by a penny.
