TSR are at it again

Apr 30, 2010 21:47

So, GoS has been taken offline. Why? Someone at TSR wrote to their server, GoDaddy, and told them that GoS was redistributing copyrighted content. As per their procedures, GoDaddy has taken the site down for now. This kind of sucks for everyone at GoS, and yet again shows that those at TSR really have their heads firmly up their asses ( Read more... )

say what now?, paysites are evil, tsr

Forget death and taxes, the most certain thing in the Sims fandom is TSR wank.

I don't understand why TSR just won't let go... I mean, okay... they made money by having us pay for some things. So, to continue making money, they copyrighted those things so, ideally, no one would be able to get them for free anywhere else. This is not how EA Games really wants things to be (after all, if anyone pays for content... it better be from EA Games itself, by God!)

But how does TSR expect to police every single website out there? I think it would get to be too much effort eventually. TSR, you had your day. Now just stop trying to hold onto everything and let it go... sheesh!

Exactly.

If the sims2 fans can get a grip on the fact that the Golden Days have passed, the lame ass cc fan sites need to get with the program, too.

TSR seem to be having a slightly insane crackdown of sorts in the last few days. They've disabled direct linking to downloads so now all links to TSR redirect to their front page and they have started acting against picture hotlinkers with cheese, see this thread at PMBD:

http://phorum.mustnotbenamed.com/index.php/topic,1871.3225.html

They must have been lurking at GoS a lot recently as mediafire links in the TSR threads were dying very rapidly. I'm not sure what triggered the letter but like Nymphy and I have said Liegen and the mods are not prepared to roll over and die, GoS will be back soon.

I guess the lack of attention was affecting Thomas and Atwa, considering no one had mentioned anything about TSR since the massive information sharing wank from last year. No secrets, no discussions (well, except for the Newsea thing), it was as if they were gone for good (I wish!).

And considering that their specialty is to upset the Free-site side of the Sims community by targeting well known creators and forums, I am not surprised they did this.

I think they are doing this for attention and not because GOS were really affecting their sales. I wish that was the case, if course, but there are tons of people unaware that selling CC is illegal, so they stay within the EA-TSR circle and get their content from them. Man, are they missing some neat stuff!

I was having the same problem with TSR links taking me to their front page, but I discovered a way around it yesterday while using FireFox.

When you see a TSR link, right click on it and go to Copy Link Location. Then, paste the url in the browser window and click on the green arrow. You'll be able to go to the page you want at TSR. :)

(Thomas, it's so cute how you keep trying to foil us. *pat pat* However, like all your endeavors, it's made of FAIL).

Holyfuck. I know I was upset with GOS for awhile, but...this low, even for TSR. Why on earth are they running around shutting down paysites? GOS was one of the best out there.

Better question: Why is everyone turning a blind eye to TSR? They've stolen, they've hacked, and now this. There's no reason to get all Big Brother kill-them-all on us just because their (crappy) stuff is so damn important. Apparently there are no laws on the internet for punishing people who insist upon having their way at all costs. That information-sharing crap was beyond ridiculous.

If I may ask, is it possible to legally get GOS back without them having it shut down again? They seem almost ruthless at this point.

I think the only ones to turn a blind eye to TSR's actions is TSR. Folks at LJ, GoS, MATY and PMBD certainly haven't forgotten.

AFAIK they'll be changing servers and putting everything back up soon.

Psh, the only reason GoS is down now is because GoDaddy is a fucking piece of shit host. They're known for being trigger happy, even when they've only been a domain name registrar for someone (registrars have no authority to pull your domain based on the content it's pointing towards, but GoDaddy has done it in the past).

Sure, it's shitty that it just happened now based on something from TSR, but it could have easily been anyone else--from a no-name paysite owner whinging to some annoyed ex-member making up a beef to get them TOS'ed. GoDaddy fucking sucks, end of story.

So I hope that TSR doesn't feel any sense of accomplishment. Any of us could have probably written something to GoDaddy and gotten the same effect, because GoDaddy SUCKS.

I was wondering what had happened. I didn't even guess it had to do with the TSR sharing and you thread. I'm just not cynical enough. Psssshhh, how could they claim copyright infringement with the EULA that Ea has?
....plus, I want to know why they rip the sites down as opposed to investigating the matter...
