Wanted: Your Input

Sim_Scenes is coming towards the end of our second year as a Livejournal community.  With our anniversary on the horizon it's a good time to reflect on our status and to make changes in the way we do things.  As always, orikes13 and I are open to suggestions and comments.  We've noticed that challenge responses have fallen off and we'd like input into ( Read more... )

My apologies, this turned out longer than I was expecting it to. genlisae April 23 2011, 18:27:11 UTC
I haven't participated yet. I keep meaning to! I just don't ever seem to find the time. On that thread, reading through aledstrange's comments she has some good suggestions that might be worth trying.

Extending the challenge to two weeks every so often might help those of us who just can't seem to find the time participate more often (or ever for some of us). Perhaps even go so far as to run the regular weekly challenges but add in a monthly challenge as well? With a slightly different format even that could be changed up from month to month. Like for example the usual prompts but instead of a maximum of 10 images say a maximum of only 3 or even 1 (I would be all over the challenge of all three prompts in one image! Given enough time to work on it of course.)

More prompts every so often, or less prompts on occasion, or perhaps a prompt pool? Give a list of prompts (perhaps on a theme as aledstrange suggested) and then participants would pick 2 or 3 for their challenge.

I do enjoy this community, even though I haven't participated yet. Seeing the different interpretations is always fun. I would love to see more activity here, more discussion as well, and even more tutorials (while realizing that it is lurkers like myself who need to step up and make that happen *whistles innocently*)

I was just rereading the community info and only just realized that behind and before the scenes were welcome here, both as questions and examples. Now I feel a little foolish as I have been a member for nearly a year and wasn't aware of this. It has me wondering how many other lurkers aren't aware of it either.

This prompted another thought. I have done tutorials before and have a few more requests for tutorials and I know from reading tutorials by others that there is (forgive my awkward wording here, I am not sure how to explain it really) this kind of void of knowledge. Those who know how to do something simply don't realize others don't know how. It is common and basic knowledge to them so they are not aware there is a need for a tutorial on that subject. I know I have been asked to "share my techniques" before, but that is really hard to do until someone points out a specific thing they want to know more about. It is automatic I think for a lot of us and we just do what we do and don't even think about it until someone asks us how we did it.

Maybe a tutorial request feature (say one post every so often where the questions can be asked and answered) where the members ask about a specific technique and those who can explain how they do it. Or a "How did they do that?" where they share an image and others respond with how they would go about recreating that image? Seeing the results and different ways of approaching the same thing would be both fun and a learning experience for everyone.

Those are just my thoughts as someone who would love to join in, I just haven't yet. I would hate to see this community go away. I do enjoy it.
