Buzz nervously paced the floor waiting on Ophelia. She’d been home for only a few days and Buzz decided it was time to take her out for a romantic dinner to celebrate. He was planning several surprises and hoped to finally solve the mystery surrounding her strange mood.

Since coming home, Ophelia had become distant. She barely talked about the recent mission on the moon. Buzz began to develop fears that she was having second thoughts about continuing their relationship. As much as it pained him, he was willing to give her space if that’s what she needed. He still had a hope that tonight’s dinner would get her to open up.

Upstairs, Ophelia took a deep breath and gathered her courage. After her return, she felt overwhelmed with a variety of emotions. The visit from Drusilla offered a glimpse of what would happen if Ophelia didn’t change the course of present. She was worried that one wrong step could still lead to a future of chaos for all of humanity. She wanted desperately to discuss her fears with Buzz but she was more afraid of his reaction to her pregnancy. She found it easier to dive into work and avoid any lengthy conversations with anyone in the house. She hoped tonight would be the right time to tell him, everything.

Taking one last glance at the mirror, she headed downstairs. When she descended the stairs, she smiled as Buzz’s eyes trailing up and down the curves of her body. Buzz reached for her hand and escorted her to the car.

On the way to the restaurant, the tension in the air ceased all attempts at conversation between them. When they arrived at the restaurant, Buzz led Ophelia to the table he’d reserved and once seated they dived into their menus again avoiding the conversation that would soon come. After giving their order to the waiter, Buzz sighed heavily and looked over at Ophelia.

Buzz: I missed you.
Ophelia: I missed you too. It’s hard to believe by December we’ll be living in space.
Buzz: Yeah. Work has been a nightmare though. With this virus spreading across the globe, I almost want to rush the day of the move just to get some rest. Hopefully the quarantines will work. It’ll also give us all a new start.

They settled into silence again as their appetizers arrived.

Buzz: Ophelia, I didn’t want to press you when you came back home, but it seems like something’s been on your mind. I know I’ve had to work on my temper and learn to share my feelings with you, but I want you to know you can do the same. I have been worried that something is coming between us. You know you can tell me anything.
Ophelia: Something has happened and I don’t know how you’re going to take it.

Buzz took a drink of water to calm his nerves. Fearing the worst, Buzz barely noticed Ophelia take his hand into hers.

Ophelia: I can tell by your expression that you fear the worst.
Buzz: I want you to know that I won’t pressure you if you want to leave. Hell, I’m not getting any younger and I don’t expect you to stop your life to be with me. We’ve had some great months together and …..
Ophelia: General, shut up!

Buzz stopped talking and held onto Ophelia’s hand.

Ophelia: Buzz, I am only saying this one more time. I don’t care about our age difference and I have no plans to leave you. I’m actually scared you’ll leave me or choose to stay out of a sense of duty. Before I left for the Moon, I went to the see Dr. Singles for a complete physical. She did a thorough check on everything and she told me that…

Ophelia paused, suddenly afraid. This was Buzz Grunt, once the most hated man in town. Would he regret their relationship once she revealed the truth? She looked at Buzz’s face noticing a dark look cross his features but it quickly passed. She took a deep breath and continued.

Ophelia: I’m pregnant. We haven’t been careful and I know I should have taken precautions but…
Buzz: I hope we’re having a girl.

Ophelia stared at Buzz in shock. She shook her head a few times hoping to clear the cobwebs because she couldn’t see her “General Buzz” being happy about this development.

Ophelia: You’re not mad?
Buzz: Ophelia, when Lyla got pregnant, I married her out of a sense of duty. It was wrong and I was not a good husband to her. If she were alive today, I’d apologize for being an ass and making her life hell.
This time around, our child may not have been planned but I’m not the same man that I used to be. I want to experience this with you because I am head over hills in love. This time around, I want to be a better father and a better husband.
Ophelia: Husband?
Buzz: Ophelia, I want you to be my wife. Will you marry me?

Buzz pulled out a small ring box and took Ophelia’s hand. Ophelia suddenly felt lightheaded. This was the moment she’d dreamed of all of her life. Ophelia shouted yes and leaned over to kiss Buzz. The patrons at the restaurant all clapped, joining in with the celebration.

Buzz: This child couldn’t have come at a better time. Waiter, we need champagne for everyone and sparkling cider for my fiancée.

An hour later Buzz drove them to downtown Strangetown and pulled in front of Pizzazz the site of their first date.

Ophelia: Are we reminiscing on our first date? I remember having to work hard to get you to come out with me.
Buzz: Even I can be shy sometimes. However, I’m glad you said yes to my marriage proposal or this might be embarrassing.
Ophelia: What?

Buzz opened the door for Ophelia and she was greeted with voices all shouting surprise and congratulations at the same time. Ophelia turned to Buzz with her mouth open.

Buzz: It’s our engagement party. It was presumptuous of me to assume you’d say yes but I wanted to do something also to celebrate your return home. I told Monica and Tank my plans several weeks ago and they helped put this together.

Ophelia turned and wrapped her arms around Buzz. She felt tears well up in her eyes seeing her friends and family gathered to support her.

Ophelia: There is no way in hell that I’m ever letting you go Buzzl! Thank you.

Ophelia planted a kiss on Buzz’s lips and they both started to mingle with the assembled crowd. The time passed and they ate dessert, danced, and Ophelia even coaxed Buzz on stage to play a few tunes. They were having a good time until a car pulled out front.

As Buzz and Ophelia danced to a fast tune, the door opened and Major Travis Lang entered. He walked over to Buzz and saluted.

Travis: General Grunt, I apologize for the intrusion but something has come up. The president needs to speak with you immediately.
Buzz: What’s going on?
Travis: Its of high priority, sir. That’s all I’ve been told. I have a secure line set up in the car.
Buzz: Ophelia, I’ll be back in a second.

Buzz followed Major Lang, got into the car and picked up the phone.

Buzz: This is General Grunt.
President Sanchez: General, I apologize for the late hour but you must hear this now instead of over your morning coffee. Loki Beaker is making a public statement tomorrow that he has a cure for the alien virus.

Buzz hesitated before answering.

Buzz: That’s a good thing, right?

President Sanchez: Considering his recent brush with the law, he is most likely going to receive a plea deal. However, you personally should be worried about his press conference. He also plans on saying that the virus and tragedy in Death Valley was all your doing. His lawyer tells me that Loki has proof that you not only ordered the development of a drug that would alter human DNA, but you also ordered that the drug have an adverse reaction on aliens. I’m warning you now because once he makes his declarations to the media you will be called in for questioning. We are working on an agreement to keep this private for the sake of the move to outer space, but I’m still waiting on a response.

Buzz felt his hands shaking. If it weren’t for his high standing position, he’d have been taken for questioning as soon as Loki had made the charges. They’d covered up most of what they’d done in Death Valley but one blaring truth still existed, Willow Nigmos. She was alive and well and he was marrying her daughter. If Loki told the President about Willow or his new zombies, he’d definitely face criminal charges. Buzz sighed.

Buzz: What do I need to do?
President Sanchez: Consider submitting your resignation for starters. General, did you really do this?
Buzz: It’s a lot more complicated than a simple yes or no answer, but if you seek just a one-word response at this time, it’s yes. However, before passing judgement you must see what was accomplished. It far outweighs my own selfishness, which I might add was fueled by youth. I did order a stop to the spread of the virus before this recent outbreak.
President Sanchez: I’ll make a deal with you. Let’s set up a call next week and you give me full disclosure to what you’ve done. I will make plans to come there by month end to see in person your secret labs and we’ll take it from there. For now, you will remain in your position pending an investigation. I can’t afford this coming out right now. My assistant is calling Loki’s lawyer again and I will order him to be silent. Goodnight.

Buzz heard the dial tone and slowly returned the receiver to its stand. He looked over at the window and saw Ophelia. She looked so happy. Would she forgive him if she found out what he’d done to her mother? Would his own daughter-in-law, Monica, forgive him knowing that both her parents died in Death Valley because of him?
Buzz got out of the car and thanked Travis. He went back inside to Ophelia and pulled her into a tight embrace.

Ophelia: Is everything okay?
Buzz: You know, when we get through this space thing, I am changing professions. For now, let’s go check out that photo booth across the street to commemorate this day.
Ophelia: From the look in your eyes I don’t think you just want to take pictures, General.
