Eden leaned on the glass counter to look at what was inside.

“I like the traditional wedding bands,” she said to Rhys.

“Just the plain gold ones?” he asked.

“Yeah.” She smiled for a moment but a sudden thought crossed her mind and her brow creased. “Except…”

“Except what?”

“Well, my mother has this idea that I’d wear her wedding ring and my potential husband--”

“Who would be me.”

“Right. You would wear my father’s ring.” She sighed and wrinkled her nose.

Rhys raised an eyebrow. “You don’t want that, do you?”

“Not particularly, no. If I’m going to get married--”

“We’re going to get married.”

“Right. If we’re going to get married--”

“Scratch the ‘if.’ We are getting married. I proposed. You said yes. It’s a done deal, babe. There’s no getting rid of me now.”

Eden laughed and slid her hand into his. “When we get married, which is today so you don’t interrupt me again, well, I..I don’t want a bad marriage attached to the ring. Nothing good can come of it. I want my own ring. A fresh ring for a good marriage if that makes any sense.”

He ran his thumb gently over her fingers. “I’ll try,” he muttered under his breath.

“What?”

He waved his hand. “Nothing. I know what you’re saying. Two brand new wedding rings coming on up.”

The two of them got their ring sizes and the clerk behind the counter pulled out two gold bands that would fit them. When they went to the cash register to purchase them, Rhys waved Eden away. “I got this,” he said.

“But I’m the heiress. I think I’m supposed to buy them,” she protested.

“What do you think I am? Some sort of random townie hobo that doesn’t have any money? Please. I got this.”

“Rhys--”

“It’s a gift.” He turned up his nose and feigned a snooty tone. “And it is entirely inappropriate for the recipient of the gift to know how much it cost. So there.” She gave him a level look. He turned his head away with a sniff. Then he turned his head back to her and stuck his tongue out.

She stuck her tongue out back at him and then laughed. “Fine. I’ll be outside.” She shook her head and walked out the door.

When Rhys came out five minutes later, he had a strange expression on his face.

“What took so long?” Eden asked.

He shrugged her question off and asked one of his own. “Hey, Ede, does your mother have a diamond engagement ring?” Her nose wrinkled involuntarily as she nodded. “I thought so,” he said. “Close your eyes.” She raised her eyebrows but closed her eyes anyway. He gently took her hand and slipped a ring on her finger. “Okay, you can open them.” She looked down and saw the blue sapphire ring he had placed on her finger. “I proposed without a ring,” he said. “In some countries I think that’s illegal and the engagement wouldn’t be considered official. Just wanted to cover all my bases.”

She smiled up at him. “How did you know that I liked sapphires?”

He blinked. “I..I didn’t.” He shrugged. “It matched your eyes,” he muttered under his breath again, but this time she heard him. She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him.

“Thank you,” she said.

“Ahh,” he said with a shrug. “Just doin’ what I’m supposed to, that’s all. Now lets go get married, Mrs. Fitzhugh.”

“I think I’m supposed to keep my last name.”

“Oh, that’s right. Huh. Wait, am I supposed to take yours?”

“I..I don’t know.” She thought about it for a moment. “Well, you can keep yours and I’ll hyphenate mine. Eden Devereaux-Fitzhugh. Sound good?”

“That’s…awesome,” he said. That strange expression appeared on his face again.

As the two of them walked back to the cabin Eden realized what that strange expression was. And she vowed to herself that she would never, ever tell Rhys that the look of him realizing that he was in love made him look kind of constipated.

Awww. Yay for them getting along, and I'm with Eden: I would not want to wear Mary or Goopy's wedding rings.
