enjoy the silence.... [for bloodinmyear]

Dean and Sam sat on separate beds in the motel room, both silent in their own thoughts. Dean watched his feet while Sam watched his hands. How much more could be said after finding your brother back from the dead and not evil?

Instead they just sat there, waiting for Bobby to call with word on how Pamela was doing after their little seance gone

Ruby didn't know shit about Dean being back, not yet. She'd given herself a few days off from the job, both collecting information and being with Sam. She had to be careful. What humanity was left in her was a double edged sword; while it gave her a point of identification and understanding no other demon had, it also made her vulnerable to the Winchester charm. Get too close, care too much, and she wouldn't be able to follow through. She'd want to keep him and she knew she couldn't.

She found him easily enough, ready to get back to work and take one step closer to Lucifer's reign. She knocked on his door and waited for an answer.

Dean looked at Sam. "Must be Bobby." Of course he was uncertain, and they couldn't be too sure of anything just yet.

Sam nodded. "Let me check."

Dean wanted to object, but he raised his hands in surrender. Sam got up and grabbed a knife to slide into the back of his jeans and headed for the door.

"Yeah?" He called out.

Ruby didn't hear Dean's voice, just the one she expected whenever she came calling. "It's me, Sam. Open up."

Dean heard her though. His jaw set and his eyes narrowed as he looked at Sam. Sam wouldn't turn to look back. He was too busy with the 'oh shit' look on his face.

Sam pulled the door open enough to look out it, but not let her see in..or Dean see out. "Now's not a good time, Ruby," he said.

Ruby narrowed her eyes a little in confusion, and maybe just a little concern. "Why? Something wrong?"

Dean was glaring at Sam's back and getting to his feet. No way was he still talking to her...

And came the puppy dog eyes on Sam. He wasn't ready for a confrontation between the three of them yet. "No, nothing. It's just...not the right time."

Dean grabbed onto the door knob and swung the door open, giving Ruby a smirk. "No, it really isn't."

Oh shit.

She just stared at Dean for all of two seconds. What the fuck? This sure threw a kink in her plans.

She did recover, however, at least outwardly.

"Dean," she said, face going cold. "Shouldn't you be on the end of something sharp and pointy right now?" Which end she didn't say. She had to feel this out before she went and revealed any sensitive information to Sam.

His face reflected the same as he looked out at her. "Shouldn't you be off kissin' ass to some higher demon?"

Ruby almost laughed. "Actually, I've been a little too busy helping your brother here to do much of anything else. You should be thanking me."

Dean looked over at Sam, who still wouldn't meet his eye. "Helpin' him with what?"

"Stay alive, for one." She glanced toward Sam herself. "He didn't exactly take your death very well."

"Oh and I'm sure his pain was your first concern," Dean bit back.

Her jaw set, but she kept her eyes straight ahead. She didn't intend on answering that straight on. She never lied straight out if she didn't have to, just chose her words carefully.

"You know, I don't know what your problem is. I've done everything I can for him, and for you, and you can't trust me because what? I'm a demon? Funny coming from someone who should be on their way to becoming one. You'd think you'd be a little more understanding after walking a mile in my shoes, or have you conveniently forgotten what they did to you?"

She gave him a look, that subtle look that said I know. Maybe she was pushing too hard with it, but maybe hitting that nerve would work in her advantage. It was a risk, but she was taking it.

Something flashed through his eyes that she had to see. Something that showed he did understand and he did remember. God did he.

He pushed those memories away. He was supposed to hate Ruby. Here, where life was normal and things were supposed to make sense. This is what they did. They argued.

"What do you want?" He asked softly. "We're in the middle of somethin'."

Bullseye.

She crossed her arms as she buried any sympathy she may have felt as soon as it rose. Even if their definition of saving the world had been the same, she wouldn't have been able to save him from the fate he'd chosen for himself. He'd chosen it, not her. There was no reason she should care.

"I was coming to tell Sam about the recent demonic uproar. I couldn't find out what it was about." She gave him a once over with her eyes. "But it's pretty obvious now."

"Yeah, and he knows all about it. Anything else?"
