In the style of Rand.

It's not a virtue for it's own sake, and it's not me being righteous. I just don't accept money I haven't earned or been gifted.

Context: I was overpaid two days' worth this pay packet due to an oversight on my managers' part. This would have gone unnoticed had I not brought it up. Now, I don't pretend to be moral and virtuous, being a virtuous flower child with love and an honest smile for all the happy children...

...but when discussing this with my coworker, his response was to just not bring it up at all and ignore it, I was overpaid, horray, don't rock the boat. This attitude annoyed me quite a bit, and it took some time before I realised why.

It's money that I received without a) earning it or b) being gifted it with no expectation of a return. This doesn't sit right with me, at all. If I had have earned it though effort, or investing, I would take it. If I had have been gifted it though some means I would have accepted it.

Needless to say, I reported this oversight. I expect no praise, and didn't do it out of company loyalty or anything like that, or even fear at being found out. A day's work for a day's pay. :)
