2 horror series for the price of... 2: The Fades & American Horror Story

So, hypertwink turned me onto "The Fades, because he is awesome. I can never have enough supernatural horror series in my life. wheeeeee ghost zombies wheee apocalypse wheeee adorable friendship wheeeee blood EVERYWHERE. I can't even tell you if it's good, because it has too many things that I like. (It just better not have a cliffhanger end to the season and then be cancelled I'M TALKING TO YOU, "BEDLAM".)

[FYI, all the episodes happen to be up at youtube. episode 1; episode 2; episode 3; episode 4]

The bromance between the two geeks main characters is very sweet. Though our protagonist Paul has a female love interest, it’s the two teen boys who appear to really be the love story of this series - even though it’s a platonic love. Reminds me of Lost Girl in that way. Like with LG’s female besties Bo and Kensi, Paul and Mac fight, make up, openly express their feelings and need for each other. (THEY ARE MAGICAL)

I tend to like the rest of the ensemble as well. Plus I have Naomi back on my screen! Or, at least the actress that played her on Skins generation two. And Chris! The actor who played Chris on Skins generation one!

Starting to watch American Horror Story after The Fades was almost an unfair comparison. The Fades has better dialogue, more interesting cinematography, more gritty gore. On the other hand, they really do belong to two distinct horror genres - though ghosts are central to both, The Fades is really an apocalypse tale (angelic references, zombies, small group standing against the end of the world) while American Horror Story is a haunted house story (family moves in, starts falling apart as malevolent energies assert themselves).

The town seems to be populated by weird caricatures. This will only work for me if they continue to go all-out with the surreal, eerie vibe a la Twin Peaks. Don’t go “serious” or earnest here, Murphy, or you’ll kill it.

I think American Horror Story has a slight edge with mostly naked guy shots. Is this how gay dudes feel about shows with gratuitous cleavage? Dear RM, I’ve seen enough of Dylan McDermott to last me a lifetime. k thanx.
