Random cool shit...
Sympathy For The Devil by merisunshine36, thedeadparrot {Social Network - gen ensemble, background Mark/Eduardo}
(21,600 words) Mafia AU. In which Mark heads up organized crime, Dustin and Chris clean up his messes, and Eduardo is his life partner who isn't comfortable with the business. And Divya is out for only himself.
Thursdayverse by apiphile & jar {Bandom - slashy gen; Bob/Frank, Pete/Patrick, everyone/death}
(150,000 words) hell fucking yes. Splendid mob AU that's dark, vicious, and delightfully psychotic. There are pairings that pop up here and there, but really it's just one big hot mess. Read it as hypnotically brutal gen fic. Character death all over the place. And oh, so much blood & gore. *rolls around in it giddily*
I enjoyed this one in a very different way than Sympathy for The Devil (above). If horrible shit like this happened to Mark/Eduardo, I would cry a river of tears and want to punch the author in the face. Here I could just be like, "yay!". I just react differently to RPS. Death fic never bothered me as much in Popslash and doesn't bother me in Bandom in a way that it just DOES in media fandoms. I don't know why. I guess it's that these are just wacky AU versions of the "real people". In media fandoms, it feels like what's happening is really happening to the characters I know. idek. It makes sense to my heart.
Easy Come, Easy Go by Helenish {Popslash - Justin/Chris, JC/Lance, JC/Joey}
(16,000 words) The boss. The hustler. The contract killer. The loyal henchman. The gangster's moll (aka hooker!Justin). Like the Thursdayverse, features character death. This was the first mob AU I ever read and if I hadn't already been in love with Helen's work, I would have fallen here. (she's more well known now for fics like "Patience, A Steady Hand", "Pants on Fire", and "Your Inevitable Unhappy Ending")
This Thing of Ours (It Needs a Better Name) by leupagus {Hawaii 5-0 - Steve/Danny, Rachel/Stan}
(35,900 words) The one where Danny is a mob boss, Rachel & Stan are his right and left hands, and Steve is... still Steve. A fantastic AU of the first episodes of S1.
Semper Fidelis Familia by hackthis {Generation Kill - Brad/Nate}
(21,900 words) Mob AU. "Nate doesn't like telling people things will be fine, because inevitably they aren't fine. Inevitably, your WASP girlfriend will find out that your father is a crime boss, or your college friends will find out who your family is, or you'll join the military and find out that you can't have that career you were hoping for because your brother is a fucking retard, and your father has throat cancer and your mother got killed in a car accident so there’s nobody to take care of things except you. If you're thinking everything is fine, chances are most of your family will realize you're gay before you do, and it'll just be this unspoken thing… as long as you do everything you're supposed to. Everything will be fine as long as you don't fall in love with the hired help."
