Being Human US 1x9 review

A few comments on the new Being Human US.

It's so weird to me that they changed it to Rebecca turning the kid instead of Aidan. Though it definitely gives things a different connotation.

In the UK version it was about the Aidan character embracing vampirism over humanity and giving it to the kid because (unlike in the pilot) he didn't see it then as monstrous. And in the US version it's maybe about how Aidan has been a faulty mentor & given Rebecca's illusions about managing their condition. (and also Rebecca being made of fail, heh.)

Awww Aidan, "I am telling you this because you're my best friend." (Except I do feel like they need to give us a bit more show and less tell about their relationship. I need to see more of Josh liking Aidan, you know, personally.)

I like how they have Josh call him out on how Aidan doesn't tell him anything until things have imploded. That's something that was consistent in BH UK as well, but I don't remember George pinpointing it in Seasons 1 or 2 (I’m not thinking about S3, because I am in denial & it does not exist for me).

This is probably not the direction they're intending to go... but I feel like Aidan doesn't communicate because he's so much about repressing and denying his vampire self. He's ashamed of who he is, and he needs to own it as much as George really needed to own being a werewolf in UK S1. I think he needs to let Josh see who really is, and Josh needs to fucking MAN UP and deal with the real Aidan and support him. So far the relationship feels too uneven to me -- Aidan's "there" for Josh much more than Josh is for Aidan. Part of this is Aidan's fault, for not reaching out, but I think part of it is Josh's fault for giving a strong impression that the honesty and reaching out would lead to rejection.

Josh got close to committing the cardinal sin for me in this episode. There’s a reason why I love Elena Gilbert and Sam&Dean Winchester like whoa. In supernatural dramas I like the characters with unconditional love, who don’t walk away when it gets alien and hard. I want created family that accepts the monster in each other! Josh has yet to become the Alaric to Aidan’s Damon and at the end of the day... that’s what I want. (I get that's not what OTHER viewers always want. But it's what I'm looking for, personally.)

I enjoyed Sally’s realization about her “echo” - meeting broken guys who she lets swallow her. Though it would have worked for me better if she’d taken another episode of interaction with this guy before realizing the pattern. It was almost too easily earned for a revelation. But I'm withholding judgment until I see where they're going with this. (The special effects for the ghost making out looked really neat. I approve! Though Josh was being a ginormous dick again. wtf, writers?)

I knew Aidan was gonna kill the kid from the start.

and my Bishop continues to be his amazing self. Taking care of business to bring Aidan back into the fold! bwahahahaha. you go, bb! ♥

warning: tl;dr rant

Yep, I’m one of those viewers who isn’t phased at all by Bishop’s actions. I don't really want or expect vampire characters to obey human morality. Vampires that don't kill & compel people can GTFO. ;)

Sometimes I get frustrated about how my 'pro inhuman values' appreciation seems to be such a problem for some people. Like, it seems lately that every time I’m in a supernatural/sci-fi fandom I piss off someone by my not-giving-a-shit-about-your-moral-qualms. And they just won’t back off until I “admit” they they’re right and fictional characters all need to be Very Nice People or fictionally punished/written off. IDEK why my interests are so threatening to them. I’m like, "look I just don’t care and why do you feel that you need to MAKE ME?" and they’re all, "BUT YOU MUST UNDERSTAND WHY THIS IS WRONG"

Just, can’t we just all agree to have different things that appeal to us in a supernatural character? dear fandom, if you hate the idea of Bishop eating babies that's fine but I LOVE IT and I don't want to hear another judgey word about my interests. YOU can be free to be very preoccupied about the moral implications of a vampire or demon’s behavior and I can... not give a fuck. And meet up with you guys later to discuss the problematic subtext in this or that character's actions on Hawaii 5-0 or Dawson's Creek or White Collar or NCIS or The Good Wife or some other non-genre program. WE ALL WIN. \o/
