Anastasia
Eva Ibbotson writes in her foreword to Journey to the River Sea about that little kick your head you get when you find something that is yours. Imperial Russia, specifically St.Petersburg, is mostly definitely mine. This movie captures the magic and sparkle and dark mystery that I always associate with this city with wonderfully accurate backdrops and gorgeous, spooky music.

Honestly, I cannot watch it without getting shivers done my spine.
Ballet
My love of ballet has grown slowly over the past five years, and I can barely pinpoint where it started. I think, perhaps, a few years ago when my mother took me to see Swan Lake and for 2 1/2 hours I was lost in a world of beauty and elegance in the utmost. It is not just pretty girls dancing in pretty frocks looking pretty; it is years and years of dedication and work and pain, pushing your body to achieve perfection. Ballet, it's shapes and lines and movements, is absolutely gorgeous.
City of Flowers, Stravaganti
These both come from the Stravaganza series of books by Mary Hoffman. I LOVE these, so so much. It's magic and mystery and sex and violence and life and death in some of the most beautiful cities in the world with some of my favourite ever literary characters. Gah I love it.
The Duchessa glanced, steely-eyed, at her waiting-women, who were all utterly dependent on her for their living.
'And in return for your silence, and the loan of your fresh young body, I give you your dowry. Over the ages many young girs have been so rewarded for lending their bodies to their betters. You are more fortunate than most. Your virtue is intact - except for a slight incursion of sea water.'
Fair Trade
The world isn't fair. But this organisation goes a little way to making it less unfair for some people. Sustainability is so important; this is not just giving random donations to poor farmers or communities, but helping them to make their own money.
And the chocolate owns all.
Lace dresses
Because they're just so damn pretty.
Russian literature
I love Russia. Apart from the fact Russians have produced some of te most well-written, original, revolutionary, legendary literature ever written, their books allow me to sink into their world, for just a while.
