Music is getting better as I age. I've gone into this major spree of listening to WWOZ New Orleans which plays all kinds of excellent funk, soul, hip hop, country, blues, jazz, zydeco, etc. And it's amazing. The more I listen to that music the more I am hear how pretty much all the music I listen to is drawing on similar sources. I've been listening to rock and roll since I was 11 at least, and rock is just another out spring from that same heritage. I can hear blues in the drum rolls and the guitar.
Now I clearly didn't make this up. I've read these explanations before, but now I am actually experiencing them while I'm listening to music. It's wonderful. I feel like I'm listening through the music for this backdrop to the sound that is where all music comes from. It's like observing structures in nature. Yesterday I was removing the seeds from dried juniper berries. I was basically crushing these little dried things and then rolling them around to find the more structured geometric seed amongst all the dried berry mush. It's almost like that with listening to music. What we hear is all that delicious juicy berry mush, but it has a seed inside.
