Character Name: Veralidaine “Daine” Sarrasri

Character Series: The Immortals Quartet (from the Tortall Series)

Character Age: Sixteen

Background: Daine was born an illegitimate child to Sarra, a hedge witch living in the small town of Snowsdale in Galla. For the first thirteen years of her life, she lived with her mother and grandfather on a small farm, without ever knowing who her father truly was. The only answer that her mother gave her was that she was conceived on the night of Beltane, and that her father wasn’t a married man. Other than that, Daine’s parentage was shrouded in mystery. Her mother, hopeful that Daine would have gained the ability to do magic, tested her daughter repeatedly for any sign of the Gift. This eventually became a sore spot for Daine, as it reminded her of how disappointed her mother was the more she tested her.

One night, when Daine was about thirteen, Sarra asked her to deliver some medicine to a sick friend in the next valley. Daine ended up spending the night; when she returned, she discovered nothing but the ashes of what used to be her home. Her mother and grandfather had been killed during the fire, and the animals had either been taken or killed as well. It was several days before anyone from the village came to check on them. When they did, Daine was devastated that despite her mother’s good care for the villagers, they didn’t think she deserved the same respect. Daine was angry, and threw rocks at them before running off into the forest and living with a pack of wolves who had become her friends. The wolves aided her in killing off the bandits by ambushing their campsite. By this time, Daine had become so wild that she could not even speak to Cloud, her horse, and walked on all fours. After the villagers came to hunt Daine, claiming that she was mad, Cloud decided that this was enough. She nipped Daine on the elbow to bring her back to her humanity.

After “turning wild,” Daine and Cloud left Snowsdale and to the capitol of Galla, looking for a way to get out of her old village for good. She was hired by Onua, a K’miri woman who worked for the Queen’s Riders in the country of Tortall. Despite Daine’s young age, her way with the horses that Onua was bring back to Tortall convinced the older woman to hire her. On the way to Tortall, Daine is visited by the badger god, who gives her a silver claw that enables him to keep a better eye on her. She also witnesses her first immortals in the human realm- Stormwings, who were chasing a disoriented and sick bird. When the local birds rush to Daine’s aid in fighting the stormwings, Daine experiences her first healing, albeit unknowingly. The need of the birds pulls the magic out of her- Onua learns then that Daine is no normal teenage girl.

The bird that the Stormwings were chasing turned out to be Numair Salmalín, Tortall’s head mage and one of the seven most powerful mages in the world. Daine and he become friends quickly- and he explains to her that although she does not have the Gift, Daine possesses a special type of magic, called Wild Magic. She is the only person he has seen that has so much, however. He helps her to separate her humanity from her magic, which prevents her from going mad in the future.

After she reaches Tortall, Daine has many adventures. With the Queen’s Riders trainees, she travels to the coast for the first time, and helps fight Carthaki soldiers and war barges in the battle of Pirate’s Swoop. She unleashes the kraken upon the barges, and learns that her magic lets her speak to not only mortal animals, but immortal animals as well. The magic will not let her hear the thoughts of humans, or even part-humans like Stormwings or Ogres. Later, she is called by her wolf pack from Galla to help save Fief Dunlath, whose forest is being destroyed by humans seeking fire opals. While on this mission for the wolves, the badger tells Daine about another aspect to her magic: she can join minds with animals. This allows her to experience their senses, and they become smarter as a result. This also allows her to shapeshift into different animals. At first, Daine could not shapeshift into any animal that was not a carnivore. Later on, she is able to change into deer and wild geese, as well as wolves, eagles, and many others. Her healing becomes more advanced- she can save animals who are close to death without the magic being dragged out of her.

When she was fifteen, Daine was a member of the Tortall delegation to Carthak, on a peace mission. While there, she warily befriends the Emperor and cures his birds of a mysterious illness, which turns out to be poisoning from the paint in the aviary. But Emperor Orzone has laid a trap for Daine, Numair, and Kitten, the dragon baby that Daine rescued after the Pirate’s Swoop battle. Orzone drugs Daine after gaining her trust, and falsely says that she is a member of the secret resistance against the Emperor, and has run off to the countryside. The peace talks that had been going on ended on a sour note, and Orzone declares that he will want war against Tortall for Daine’s false deceit. Numair sends a simaculrum to Carthak to search for Daine, and the fake Numair is killed. When Daine wakes from the slumber of the dreamrose potion she was fed, she flies into a rage over hearing about the “death” of Numair. She raises the dead skeletons in the Hall of Bones and tears the palace down in her anger. Orzone turns himself into a Stormwing to save himself from Daine’s wrath, and escapes for the meantime. The Graveyard Hag, patron goddess of Carthak, takes away Daine’s power to raise the dead after the ransacking has been completed.

During this time, Daine finds out that her father is Weiryn, god of the hunt. Her mother, after her death, has gone to live with him in the Divine Realms, and is now a lesser goddess called the Green Woman. Her wild magic stems from her divine parentage. And when the time comes, she will have a choice to go and live in the Divine Realms or continue with the mortals to the Black God’s realms.

At Midwinter the next year, Daine and Numair, through Orzone’s plot to destroy them gone wrong, get swept up into the Realms of the Gods.

Personality: Daine is a person who has the unique ability to be sensitive to the needs of animals as well as humans. When she was younger, she took care of animals when they were sick or hurt- now she heals them with her magic, but the concern is the same. With people, Daine can be shy around those she doesn’t know very well. But once she gets to know you, she is sweet and caring. Daine is fiercely loyal to her friends, both human and animals. When Orzone kills the simaculrum of Numair, Daine flies into a rage and (with the help of the gods) in her anger tears down his palace. She will defend her friends no matter what happens. Her stubborn streak is as wide as her generosity, however. When Daine decides to do something, no one can change her mind. For example, when she tries to hear the whales in the ocean, she refuses to give up and even stops her own heart to be able to hear over its beating.

Daine is also very practical, despite her caring heart. She can’t stand conversations that seem to ramble, and prefers to get to the heart of the matter. When people keep secrets from her, she retorts that perhaps it would be better if she left the conversation, so they could stop talking in riddles. When Lindhall, Numair, and Kaddar are speaking in riddles during Emperor Mage, Daine leaves the room frustrated by their inability to say the whole truth. Her temper is also short, though Daine is able to rein it in most times by holding her breath and counting to either three or five. She does this a lot when people are scared of animals who she believes to be friendly (such as the Long Lake wolf pack) and when tired and stressed. Her temper also reaches to her love of animals; she is not afraid to tell someone off if they are mistreating an animal or destroying the lands that animals use to hunt and live.

But against some immortals and mortal animals, she is very closed-minded. Her enemies in the Immortal Realms are Stormwings, metal birds with human heads. Because they are creatures who used to feed off of the dead on the battlefield, Daine has a natural aversion to them. They hunt Numair in the first book, and Daine shoots one of their queens in the eye. This leads to a mutual hatred on either side. In Wolf Speaker, she manages to learn that Stormwings only serve the purpose they were meant to- they are not to blame for being evil. Being evil is their nature. She manages to put away most of her hatred for one Stormwing in particular, Rikash. He is a dear friend to her, and after his death she even names one of her children after him later on in the series. Daine also has a strong dislike for chickens. She claims that their thoughts are so stupid that no one could ever bear them fully if you heard what they thought about all the time. That being said, she never manages to lose her dislike of chickens in the series and gladly eats them when served, despite not being able to eat other animals like deer and geese.

Daine, like her animal friends, prefers open spaces to enclosed ones. In Wild Magic, she cannot sleep when on an upper floor, and feels enclosed without her animals around her. She would rather sleep on the ground outside than in a soft bed three stories up in the castle. In Emperor Mage, she is upset when she wakes up to find herself in a small dungeon cell with no windows or doors. Not being able to be near nature upsets her. As a part of her half-god heritage, Daine is also an ace shot with most bows. She can hit a target dead center, and in Wolf-Speaker boasts that with her crossbow she has a two-hundred yard range. This is the product of many years of practice, but it is also a skill that came from Weiryn, who is a hunt god. It is a family trait, and helps Daine in several situations.

Daine can be shy about her past. She is proud of being her mother’s daughter, and proudly calls herself Sarrasri, or “daughter of Sarra”- a bastard’s name. But other than letting you know that piece of information, she generally won’t let you know more unless she trusts you entirely. Because she considers what happened after her house burned down to be embarrassing, she doesn’t want to be mocked. Now that Daine is older, she has accepted that as part of her life and her past, but still refuses to tell anyone unless it is absolutely necessary. Thankfully, most of her close friends already know. Still, she is sweet and easy to get along with, even with a stubborn chin and a temper.

Abilities:
- Wild Magic, which lets Daine communicate with animals
- Shape-shifting
- Supreme skill with archery, especially with longbows
- Ability to make animals smarter
