Believe
Airies arrived on a Saturday. She entered the huge building and walked across the Lobby to a large desk.
“Um… Hi. My name is Airies. Do you know where I can register or sign in? I’m the transfer student that applied to come here,“ she said.
“Just a minute,” the secretary replied. She busily typed away on the keyboard in front of her. Then she stood and motioned to her.
“Okay, right this way.”
The nurse led her down a long corridor of doors. Airies lost count. At door 124, the secretary stopped.
“This is the room that you will be staying in while you are here with us. You will have four other room mates.” She opened the door. Three heads looked up from the table in the corner.
“This is Airies. She’s going to be staying with us for a while. Now girls, make her feel at home and Airies”- she now directed her voice at Airies- “feel free to ask me if you need anything.”
“Ok.”
Then, she handed her a uniform, a handbook -for rules she supposed-, and some maps and brochures. She turned and walked back down the hall and turned the corner.
“Hi,” one of the girls spoke. “My name is Victoria, but you can call me Tori. She studied the long, blonde haired blue-eyed girl. She was about the same height as herself. Then, the next person spoke.
“Hey. I’m Teresa. I would love to talk, but I have a paper to do.” With that, she turned around to face the computer.
“Hi Airies, I’m Cassie. If you need any help of learning the ropes and what you can and can’t do around here, I can help.
“Teresa is a work-a-holic. She is at the top of her class. Speaking of classes, what grade are you in”? Asked Tori.
“I’m Fifteen years old and in the 10th grade.”
“Really? You look older than that,” Cassie noted.
“DONE.” Teresa gave a long, exasperated sigh.
“Your done with the whole paper???” Questioned Tori.
“Ya. I worked on it most of last night.”
“Don’t you ever take a break, Reese?” asked Cassie.
“Sometimes.” Teresa (Reese) smiled.
Obviously, she would be one to break the lights out rule that Airies was just reading about while listening to her new roommates talk.
“So Airies. You’ll be sleeping on the bottom bunk of the bed beside the wall. Also, You have the first two drawers in the dresser,” Teresa said sweetly.
“Hey!” Cassie exclaimed. “Lets give Airies -that’s such an awesome name- a tour of the building. What do you say, Airies?
“That would be fun!” She said enthusiastically. She really was interested in seeing the whole building. It seemed like it would be endless. I wonder why people don’t get lost, she mused to herself.
It took them a whole 2 hours to show her everything. Of course, that was because they would stop and explain stuff to her. The four got along great. Airies had a wonderful time getting to know each one of them. They were each different and unique. Cassie is shy, quiet, friendly, and artistic; Reese is hardworking, intelligent, and dedicated to her studies, but still made time to clown around. Tori is outgoing, athletic, and popular- but not snobby. After the tour, they started heading back to the room so Airies could get settled. They were in the lobby waiting to take the elevator up when a group of guys came walking past. Reese nudged Cassie in the side.
“Quit it,” Cassie furiously whispered.
One of the boys turned around and greeted her. Cassie lightly blushed and sweetly said, “hi,” back.
“That’s Michael- Cassie’s crush,” Tori explained. “They both like each other, but won’t admit it. They are good friends though. The taller, and- in my opinion- cuter boy in the back is Lance. He’s the captain of the fencing team and…”
“Fencing,” she said with interest.
“Ya. There’s a fencing team here. They haven’t decided who is going to be on the team, so you can try out if you want too. There are also lots of other sports…”
Unfortunately, she never got to hear the rest. Her thoughts were thousands of miles away back home with her parents. There was still a possibility that she could do the thing she loved most in the world. Sword fight!!!
“Where can I sign up for the fencing team?” Airies asked.
“Well, I don’t really know. Why don’t you ask Lance? I’m sure he could tell you better than I could- him being captain and all,” Tori suggested.
“But I just can’t go up to him. I don’t even know him,” Airies reasoned.
“Fine. I’ll introduce you.”
“Wait… n…no… you just can’t…” It was too late. She had already called Lance over.
“Lance, I’d like to introduce you to Airies Lee. Airies, this is Lance Robinson. Lance, where can she sign up to be on the fencing team?”
“You don’t have to sign up. Just come and try out. I’ll leave a space open for you to show us what you’ve got.”
“Thanks. Um… so... when do I come”? Airies asked anxiously.
“Well actually- he looked at his watch. You could come right now I you like. I’m going to head over there just as soon as I get my equipment.”
“Hey Airies,” called Tori, “Me and Reese are headed back up stairs. Cassie is going to go watch Michael fence. You can go with her if you want.”
“Sure,” she replied. “Hey Cassie, wait up.”
“You’re coming along too? This will be great. I love to watch fencing. It’s exciting. Honestly, I’m afraid to try it Michael is trying to teach me a little. Its fun so far,” Cassie explained.
Aries walked along silently and listened to the group chatter on about the fencing team. She was still new to the school, so, she really didn’t know anyone well enough to talk to them. It was still her first day and she was already homesick.
“You look like your deep in thought.”
Airies jumped. “I guess I kind of was,” she admitted. She blushed. She had no idea why she was so tense. “So, is fencing fun?”
“Ya. You’ve never tried”? He asked.
“No. See I used to take Kendo. I guess the reason why I want to learn so bad is because it makes me feel closer to home.”
“Well, we’ll see how it goes today. Honestly, we’ve never had a girl on the team before. It would be a nice change. Maybe it will even humble some of the uppity boys we have on the team,” he joked.
She excitedly thought about how it would go. She had watched it before. It didn’t look so bad. But, she was in for a big surprise. Lance helped her put some gear on. It was a little big, but he promised that she would get her own if she proved worthy. He spent an hour teaching her basics. By the end of the lesson, she was ready to fence. Just to test her out, he went to the fencing area.
“ This round counts for points. This is going to be exactly like how a real fencing duel would be.”
She actually did pretty good- even though he did go easy on her. She was able to hit him twice before it was done. Which, it was best two out of three. He had already had two and she had gained one point.
