Screen/stage representations of Max…

I’ve noticed that generally, when Maximilien has been portrayed on stage and screen, he’s generally played at least a decade too old, and/or usually not nearly handsome enough - usually for ideological reasons. In a visual medium, it’s easier to make viewers dislike a character by making him/her look less attractive than in reality, and vice versa. (In contrast, Danton has been played by Brandauer or Depardieu, and even - on stage - Toby Stephens!)

So under the cut is some picspam of the prettiest better incarnations, with some actual Max for comparison…

So far, I’ve been most impressed by Jean Négroni in La Terreur et la Vertu:

and Christophe Allwright in Robespierre 1789/1989 (bonus point for the specs!):

And although the musical 1789: Les Amants de la Bastille is hardly the most serious of representations, I do think that Sébastien Agius, while darker in colouring, has something of the delicate features.
