More for 14 July: Candy-striped Incorruptible…

An interesting article by Peter McPhee on Max, whom I now think of as the "Candy-striped Incorruptible". Gérard's notes on one portrait sketch specify that his coat, waistcoat and cravat all have different stripes: nankeen yellow and green for the coat, blue and white for the waistcoat, red and white for the cravat. This may be the finished painting, minus the specs, but NB that he's changed waistcoat and coat for yet a different combination of stripes. (Max, just how big is your wardrobe?)
I think he's trying to pre-empt Adam Ant…
