The O.C. Fic: I Used To Be An Optmist, But I'm Not Anymore

Aug 24, 2005 19:56

A while ago I promised O.C. drabbles to Ctoan, Famous99, Miss_Begonia, Smc36 and OvernighterThe popular themes were Ryan angst, a bit of Cohen + 1 and a frankly mean request from Miss_Begonia to incorporate the words "brownies, fertile, metrosexual and bunny" into one slashy, fluffy future drabble. Heh. I totally did it, by the way. Somehow they ( Read more... )

Sorry commented once and am now recommenting as I didn't say what I meant clearly enough and it's not even that late, so I have no excuse.
I very much liked each of these, so much angst, until the last one, creative much!
These definitely prove short can say a lot. You tackle so many lost opportunities to provide more depth and backstory for Ryan, the baby and the idea that Sandy might have seen Ryan and Trey before, highly plausible.
My absolute favourite is the one for Famous love each piece of Ryan's life that you pick out to associate the smells with and each one at night when such feelings are stronger, I think. Sum greater than the whole? Saying so much with so few words.

Dude, it nearly killed me. You know how I like to go on and on Mrs Doyle styl-ee! But drabbles are fun and take a discipline all of their on so I'm glad I tried it and very glad it worked for you!

Excellent set of drabbles there, young lady. Particularly liked the lost baby one - very powerful stuff. And the skates one, too, very good. As for the images conjured by the last one? Snort.

and sorry to report that your music link seems to be buggered, sweets

Why, thank you, official Best Drabbler, 2005! I don't know why I like the bunny, but I do. I just love the idea of Seth saying "Hi Frank" without a second thought. You know my daft little mind...

I think I blasphemed to the yousendit gods or something. It was a bit big. I may well try again...

It seems like the download worked for me. Still working on it, but it's finishing up right now... Thankee. I'm going to clean up all my music files and then figure out why half the songs won't load onto my ipod!
As for the drabbles. They were awesome. It takes a lot to write a short piece. It take more control. It's more aligned with poetry, which I suck at. I loved these. Each one evoked such emotion, especially the one where you learn Sandy had met Ryan before.
As for the title... you put a lot of pressure on me... I feel like I have to now it. Alas,I don't. It rings a bell. I'm thinking the Outisders by S.E. Hinton, but I don't think it. Then I was thinking maybe in the His Dark Materials Trilogy. But I can't place it. *sigh* I feel like a failure now.
But I loved my pressie anyway.

And you call yourself a high school librarian?! Ha!

It's from "Just As Long As We're Together" by Judy Blume, it's the title of Stephanie's essay after her parents separate. I love that book. Admittedly, it's kind of obscure!

I have to say the drabbles were tricky, particularly the one for overnighter. After the first wo came out at 184 words each by coincidence, I had to keep it up and the implications of a prior interaction were so huge, it was difficult to find the right framework for it, so I'm glad it worked for you! Quite smugly pleased with myself actually...

"middle school librarian" but come one... I read "Just as Long As We're Together" 17 years ago? Probably more! Now I don't feel so bad.

How did I miss these before? You chose a great, significant range of topics that tap into so many emotions and issues that TPTB have yet to address. *Sigh* Each one has its compass and there's a sense of continuity- until the final one ( ... )

Ye Gods, Beachtree I think your comments are longer than my drabbles!

Thanks, but I can't take much credit for this, I was prompted for most of them, I just ahd to find a way of telling them. It's nice to do bite size angst.

Ryan gay? No way! Seth? I would not be shocked. He's just plain inexperienced and confused and pathetically in ecstasy with attention so.... Must make the Miss happy!

Don't know about the Dawn thing. I think it may have evolved, but at some point became a conscious way of dissassociating himself from what she represented and not letting her get too close. If she's a person with a name, that same expectation and dependence isn't implied or anticipated. It humanizes her and makes her not so much the infallible parent kids see up to a certain age, but someone with problems who doesn't and can't parent. If she loses that connection and that significance, then the lack of concern and contact loses it's punch- in theory.

Ryan is gay! Ryan is gay!

*ahem*

I'm a Seth girl at heart, weird considering I mostly write Ryan centric fic. I just think he's fascinating, really we know less about who made him who he is than we do Ryan. And I hope that Dawn shows up again, just to give us more things to discuss. Bring on season 3!
