It was just a text message

So, for our poetry assignment we had to write a poem that was thirty lines long and that was a complete grammatically correct sentence.  I probably fudged a little on the punctuation.  This was, in part, inspired by the long drawn-out tearful phone conversation that the girl at the computer beside me continued to carry out while we all listened in pretending that we weren't.

p.s.  School is really stressing me out and I think I might do something crazy.

Untitled

You sit there, slouched low in the chair
With your hat pulled down low over your eyes,
And tell me you think it would be wise
If I just left, now,
And never came back,
Because somewhere along the line
(You don’t know exactly when)
You grew tired of my smile,
Or my eyes, or the color of my hair,
And now you’ve met someone there
Where you work your nine to five,
Whose hair is a darker shade
And whose eyes are a different blue,
Which just seemed so right to you
That you had to pursue
Her, even though you belonged to me,
Because love no longer seemed certain
Or so well defined
As it had when we first met
(If that feeling that we both
Felt was really even love
And not just what we wanted to be love)
So, it probably would be best
If we just had a rest -
A break from each other -
Though you’ve already found another
And I know you’re not planning on coming back,
Because if you did I wouldn’t take you,
Since I can’t deal with the lack
Of tears in your eyes
As you say your false goodbyes.
