Weekend Housewarming Party

Had a nice weekend even though I had to work. I did start out kinda injured. I was coming home on Friday night and some asshole pushed me off the tram. I had paused to get the right amount of change and this guy behind me pushed me. I lost my balance and fell out, landing on my knees and scrapping it. The jackass didn't even bother to say sorry or even look to see if I was ok. He just ran off. So now my knees are bruised and scrapped.

Saturday I went to a friend's housewarming party on Saturday. It was a really nice place and it was fun to catch up with couple of friends I hadn't seen since I went off to Canada last month. So, we decided to go see an Omnimax show at the Hong Kong Science Center next Sunday. Something about sea monsters. I've never been to an Omnimax show before. I wonder what those are like. My friend was psyched so I got a bit interested. Though one of them said there was a BBQ going on Saturday night at another friend's place but I think I'll pass. It's way too hot in the summer here to BBQ. I told them I love air con. I will got to the air con gatherings. I love this new group of friends I met a few months ago. We met while horse racing. They really nice and down to earth. And they noticed my scrapped knees. They were the only ones who did. And I love how they also said "yeah ... asshole." And they loved what I made at the party though I didn't tell anyone I made them. I don't know why I do that. I just hate showing off I guess. I get a little embarrassed being the center of attention.

So, what did I make at the party? Since my friend said "no housewarming gifts", I brought food. And that food was pizza puffs. I saw it on a food blog and did some adjustments. The original recipe only had pepperoni. I added sundried tomatoes, shallots and green peppers and a bit of oregano and basil. It was quite good. Small little puffy bites of pizza. Though this was my first time making them and I only had a toaster oven instead of a regular oven, I over baked them a bit so they came out a bit dry. But next time I make them I will shorten the time period. I think I need to do that with all the baking recipes as I own a toaster oven. Most people in Hong Kong do as Chinese people don't really use an oven much. It's all about the wok.

Pizza Puffs

Makes 24

Ingredients:

3/4 cup flour
3/4 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp. dried oregano
3/4 cup milk
1 egg, lightly beaten
about 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup diced pepperoni
1/2 cup diced green peppers
1 tbsp diced sundried tomatoes
1 tbsp diced shallots
1/2 cup pizza sauce (homemade or store-bought)
2 tbsp finely diced fresh basil

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 375F.
2. Grease a 24-cup mini muffin pan.
3. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder and oregano.
4. Whisk in the milk and egg.
5. Stir in the mozzarella, green peppers, sundried tomatoes, shallots, 1 tbsp basil and pepperoni.
6. Let stand for 10 minutes.
7. Stir the batter and divide among the mini-muffin cups.
8. Bake until puffed and golden, 20 to 25 minutes.
9. Warm the pizza sauce, then stir in 1 tablespoon basil. Serve the puffs with the pizza sauce for dipping.

I realized I never did have a housewarming for my new place. I guess I should do one. I'll check my schedule in September and see how it goes.

BTW, while I was on vacation, a gecko moved into my flat. I don't know what to do! I tried to vacuum it away but it ran quickly. It's still here because it frickin' shits in a corner almost every day. Like "yeah sucker .... you moved, I moved with you!" :(
