When Jared opens his eyes, he sees a head of hazel hair resting on the bed, using the mattress as a pillow. Chris has pushed the chair as close to the bed as possible, hands folded under his head. The man must be exhausted to be able to sleep in such an uncomfortable position.
A flush of guilt passes through him at the thought of why he’s so tired. Chris must’ve had a terrible night at the police station. Not to mention the fact that Tom showed up at his door step yesterday. Had Chris been as scared as Jared was? Probably not, Jared reasons. Hopes.
Jared reaches out to touch the soft hair as Chris turns his head and smiles, still resting on the mattress.
“You’re up.” It could’ve been said by either, but it’s Jared who gets the first word.
“Yeah, well, I can’t sleep with you worrying so loudly.” Chris lightly pushes into Jared’s fingers, stroking through the dark strands.
Jared smiles at this, overwhelmed by his emotions upon seeing the gorgeous man again.
“Hey,” he simply says, moving his hand to brush across a stubble-marked chin instead.
“Hey,” the reply is whispered, as Chris turns his head to kiss Jared’s palm.
Electric waves shoot up from Jared ’s hands, reaching his heart a second later. It skips a beat, making his breath hitch.
“Thank you,” Chris continues.
“What? For what?” Jared says, confused, as he searches his boyfriend’s face for the meaning behind those words.
“For making your statement, it must have been so hard…and I know you did it for my sake. Thank you.”
Tearful eyes widen as Chris’s sincere words sink in. He takes a few moments to recover before replying.
“I’m so sorry…for last night. Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine, just couldn’t control myself, I got so pissed…I‘m not sorry though. I‘d gladly do it again.”
“What happened to him? Where…is he?”
“ He’s in the jail infirmary. He’s not getting out on bail again.”
Jared nods at this, pushing the thought of a trial sometime in the future away. His head is filled with things he could say, should say, but having his boyfriend so close again is making it difficult to focus. The only thing he wants is to get closer, needs to feel the love he can see in Chris’s eyes.
He tugs at Chris ’s shirt collar with his hand, not sure how to communicate the urge he’s feeling. Chris looks momentarily confused until Jared manages to scoot over on the bed, creating room next to him. He keeps tugging at Chris, who hesitates briefly before finally getting his boyfriends intentions.
It’s a tight fit, Jared already being too large for the standardized bed, but Chris manages to lie down next to his boyfriend. He’s on his side, one leg sprawled over Jared’s for balance. Jared sighs contently as Chris carefully places his hand on Jared’s chest, looking at him intently to make sure it’s a welcomed touch. Jared wraps his left arm around Chris in response, pulling him even closer.
“ I’m sorry I didn’t want you to come.” He whispers into his bed mate’s ear.
“It’s cool, Jared, I understand. At least I think I do. We can talk about it if you want, but you don‘t have to explain.”
“I just didn’t want, don't want, you to feel obligated… to stay, I mean. I just wanted you to have time to think about it. And not see me like…well, like this.” Jared tries his best to explain, but it doesn’t seem to make as much sense when it’s said out loud as it did in his head. Jared doesn’t know how to continue, how to explain that those thoughts are still there, just waiting for an opportunity to resurface.
Chris can feel the heart beating underneath his fingers as he ponders his reply.
“Yeah, that’s pretty much what I thought. And now you’ve realize those were ridiculous thoughts and changed your mind?” Hope, with a hint of the familiar teasing colours Chris’s voice.
Jared can’t stop the small chuckle that leaves his lips.
“Something like that. But don’t expect me to…”
“Shh, s’okay. I don’t. I know there’s a long road ahead, and it might be bumpy as hell. But as long as you want me to come along for the ride, I won’t ask for anything else.”
Jared’s heart swells at the intensity of the emotions Chris is portraying.
“You sure, Chris? I mean, I really understand if you don’t…no one will think less of you.”
“Oh, man… I know we’re gay and all, but we really shouldn’t be this girly. I want you, you want me, it’s gonna be hard, we still want it. Deal?”
Chris the no-bullshitter is back. Jared can’t help but grin at the normality of the tone of Chris’s voice. Maybe Jensen was right when he said that Chris wouldn’t treat him differently this time either."
"Deal.”
Satisfied with his answer, Chris snuggles closer and strokes his hand gently over Jared’s chest, careful not to inflict more pain on the bruised body.
“I love you babe. You know that, right?”
The words are spoken in to the crook of Jared’s neck, warm breath accompanying the statement.
“I know. And I love you too.”
“Yeah, who wouldn’t, I’m perfect.”
Jared feels lips against his skin shaping into a smile, Chris chuckling at his own brand of funny.
“Wanna compare fan mail, cowboy?” He quips, enjoying the banter, the escape from the rest of the world and the challenges ahead. Right now, in this moment, everything is like it’s supposed to be. Easy, safe, him and Chris. Everything else seems blessedly distant as he listens to his boyfriend’s low chuckle. It’s his favourite sound. The sound of hope, of happiness within reach.
“ Naah…don’wanna. Makes me jealous.”
“You get jealous? Mr. “I’m perfect“?"
“Shut up, you’re not the one dating TV- guide’s sexiest whatever.”
Jared succumbs to his own chuckles, strangely moved by Chris’s words.
“Oh, don’t worry, I’ll keep you. I‘m nice like that.”
“Gee thanks, I’ll try not to let it go to my head.”
Jared turns his head and plants a kiss on Chris’s head then, lingering close enough to smell left over cologne and the faint odour of what must be the police station’s signature smell.
“Dude, are you smelling me? I wouldn’t recommend that… a night in jail isn’t exactly spa-treatment.”
“I think you smell great. And I’d be worried if you went to spas.”“I’m glad. And you’re full of shit.”
“Why thank you, that’s awfully kind of you.”
"I could go back to Jensen’s and freshen up quickly, though. See, I got this really great-looking boyfriend around here somewhere, and when I meet him I’d like to look my best. “
Jared tightens his grip around the older man, placing another touch of lips on soft hair.
“Please don’t go.”
Chris looks up at this, seeing the plea clearly portrayed in hazel eyes. Two pairs of eyes meet, the connection strong enough to echo in both boys’ hearts.
Chris gives a short nod, confirming that he understands the importance of Jared’s simple request.
“I’ll stay. Long as you want.”

Four months later
“I’m proud of you, Jared,” Chris says, saluting his boyfriend with his beer bottle.
Jared and Jensen both lift their bottles in response, Jensen clanking his against the couple’s before they all take a sip.
“That bastard got what he deserved thanks to what you did today.”
“Yeah, well. I had help. Thanks, guys.”
“Don’t mention it. And I for one, think I got a pretty sweet deal,” Chris smirks as he leans over the table to kiss his boyfriend, not a hint of shyness at Jensen‘s presence.
Jensen lets the kiss go on for a couple of seconds, thinking they’ve earned their reward after their court victory that afternoon. When he’s taken a long sip of his beer, ate another handful of peanuts and they show no signs of letting go, however, his patience runs out.
“Guys… get a room.”
Chris straightens then, putting a couple of inches between him and Jared. He doesn’t let go of the eye contact though, as he replies slyly:
“Sounds like a great idea to me, what do you say, Jay? How ’bout we make it an early night?”
The glint that slowly returned to Jared’s eyes in the months after the attack is accentuated by his wicked smile. Chris will never admit to the tears threatening to erupt at the sight of his boyfriends smile. It’s been a rough ride, just like they expected, but they’d managed to deal with it together. The two of them against he world.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jared had been kept in hospital for over three weeks, which was a rough start in the healing process. Being hospitalized didn’t agree with the him, and he struggled with feeling helpless, weak. The frustration he felt at not being able to eat, not being able to return to his former self was all consuming. Chris and Jensen’s attempts at reassurance didn’t save Jared from sinking in to a state of depression.
The depression and surviving on nothing but IV-nutrition left him apathetic, drained. He pushed Jensen away, pushed Chris away. Jared went against a lot of his principles when he agreed to Dr. Chase’s advice and tried anti-depressants. It was explained to him that they weren’t a miracle cure, but they took the edge off the sense of hopelessness. They gave him a push in the right direction, made him able to heal in his own way.
In the final week in hospital, Jared was finally able to start eating. It was a slow process that started with him being able to drink more, adding nutritional shakes to his diet. It was a great victory the morning Jared managed to take two bites of a blueberry muffin. The shakes were still a big part of his diet the day he was released and could go home, but Jared still felt proud the day they removed the IV. Even such a basic thing like eating on his own was something to be celebrated in the parallel universe that was his life now.
Jared never told his parents what happened, preferring to keep it between the three of them. Fighting for his recovery, to regain the confidence he’d lost, to find the courage to go on the witness stand… he couldn’t deal with more people knowing, worrying.
He couldn’t work for a long time, leaving Supernatural to be cancelled without warning. The network manufactured a story that involved hospitalization for Jared, but otherwise veered far from the truth.
Chris stayed with him at Jensen ’s place, cancelling all his shows and delaying the recording of his album. Jensen dealt with the consequences of Supernatural ending, and he also put Jared’s house up for sale.
This time around, Jared doesn’t mind feeling protected, shielded. Focusing on eating, healing, trying to get his blood pressure back to normal was more than enough for him to deal with.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chris appreciates the glint that sparkles in Jared’s hazel eyes, knows the struggle his boyfriend’s gone through to get to this point.
“Yeah,” Jared stretches, obviously faking a yawn. “I’m so tired…”
“Okay, guys… g’night. It’s only like 9 o’clock, though, so I’ll stay up for a while longer,” Jensen states, taking his beer bottle and heading to the couch. The sound on the TV is turned up high as Jared gets up and drags Chris with him down the hall and into the bedroom.’
Jared lies down on the bed, leaning back on his elbows. Chris stands still at the end of the bed, raising an eyebrow at his boyfriends pose. They've slept together every night for the last months, but it’s been nothing but good night kisses and sleeping.
Jared’s been feeling self conscious about his body, another unfamiliar feeling. He’s lost too much weight, and not being allowed to work out has left him with a body he doesn’t recognize as himself. It resembles his body as a teenager, long and lanky. His clothes are hanging off him, and he’s needed new belts to keep his jeans up. The sight Chris sees when he watches his boyfriend hasn’t changed though. Jared’s still the beautiful, handsome man he fell in love with, with killer dimples and slanting eyes.
“Come here,” Jared calls softly.
Chris doesn’t hesitate any more, crawling on top of his boyfriend, diving in to a deep kiss as Jared leans back on the mattress. They’ve kissed heatedly several times, but Chris soon notices that tonight is different. Instead of being restrained, and avoiding body contact, Jared gives it all he’s got, grinding up against Chris. Hardness grinds into Chris’s hips as he feels the intoxicating sensation of his boyfriend wanting him back.
“Oh. Shit, Jay, feels so good…” Chris can’t help the words escaping his lips as he gives in to the desire he’s kept hidden the last months. Chris tries hard to be careful, and worries for a second if his words are too much, too much pressure.
“Fuck, yeah…” Jared’s reply immediately eases Chris’s worries. He recognizes his passionate boyfriend, the one he used to be.
Jared’s large hands are roaming across Chris’s back, tugging at his t-shirt to gain access to the bare skin underneath. He’s lost in the sensation, caught up in the pure feeling of want. For the first time in a long time, there are none of the self-deprecating thoughts holding him back. He feels safe again; protected and wanted.
Made brave by these emotions, Jared lowers his hands, squeezing the firm ass, pulling Chris impossibly closer, desperate to create more friction. The rock-hard outline of Chris’s erection pushes down against his, deepening the urge they‘re both enveloped in. The urge to be closer, to be united. Together.
Jared grows frustrated with his escalating desire, no longer knowing what to ask for. He knows he ’s the one who needs to lead the way, knows he’s the reason why Chris is holding back instead of being his normal in-control self.
“Fuck, Chris… I want more…need you.”
“What do you want, Jay? You can have anything you want.” Chris makes eye contact, lust-filled eyes finding their hazel mirrors in Jared’s.
Jared doesn’t reply, frustration obvious on his flushed face. Chris takes matters into his own hands as he gets up on all fours and moves down Jared’s body, not breaking eye contact. He pauses when he’s at eyelevel with Jared’s crotch, and can’t help but looking down at the bulge in Jared’s jeans. Unconsciously he licks his lips, a sight that causes a desperate groan from Jared as he bucks up in to the air. When Chris lifts his gaze to ask permission, Jared’s nodding his head frantically. Chris chuckles as he tugs at the jeans, easily slipping them down too-slim hips, and freeing the throbbing cock.
Chris can’t stand to be patient anymore, and lowers himself unceremoniously, taking as much of the impressive length as he manages. Tasting Jared again is intoxicating, arousing beyond words. Chris’s brain short-circuits when Jared’s lets out a sound that should be illegal. His own cock feels ready to explode, threatening to cream his pants, something that hasn’t happened in as long as he can remember.
Jared’s hands are in long locks of hair, holding firm as Chris applies his skilled mouth on him. Pleasure builds up in his gut, desire too much to handle without release. Chris can feel it too, feel the flesh grow in his mouth in the seconds before Jared comes. Chris swallows down, hungry for the taste of his boyfriends pleasure. With a muffled groan, he thrusts against Jared’s legs and comes too, seconds later.
“Fuck, Chris…” are the words Jared lets out when he can breathe again.
“Yeah, I know, it…” Chris isn’t sure his statement even makes sense, left incoherent by his post-orgasmic bliss. He crawls up and snuggles into his now familiar position, nose just under Jared’s chin, one leg draped over Jared’s.
“You’re the best boyfriend like…ever.”
Chris can’t help but smile at Jared’s blissed - out voice.
“Can I get that in writing?” he replies, using humour to take the edge off his emotions.
“Sure, whatever you want. Just not right now.”
“Tomorrow then.”
“Okay. And I will be too, you know. Starting tomorrow, I’ll be a great boyfriend.”
Chris raises himself up on one elbow, taking in his boyfriends honest expression. He leans down to kiss him thoroughly, putting all the love he feels into the kiss.
“You already are, Jay. Don’t doubt that. I love you, I want you, and I need you. If you feel the same, you‘re already the best boyfriend in the world.”
Jared just nods, tearful eyes explaining why he doesn’t reply, only lifts his head for one more kiss. Jared can’t believe how lucky he is, to have someone like Chris. Can’t believe how perfect this moment is.
How perfect they are, together.
