Finally saw the film lastnight. I've been meaning to for over a year now, but didn't want to watch it alone. My friends finally made it happen, with bonus delicious Chinese snacks.
I love the whole cast. I think they played amazing characters together, and events were just crazy enough to be believable. It was the family road trip from hell leading slowly to purgatory. I especially loved Uncle Frank.
This film also re-confirmed for me that child beauty pageants are a pedophilic nightmare. I liked Olive's performance for it's honesty about what the pageant was really about, and who she was in it (she was the only contestant that looked like an actual child and wasn't dressed/made up as an adult). I am in love with the pageant organizer's reaction.
There is a lot of cultural commentary in this alongside the main story. It's smart, funny, and above all stays focused on the story of this averagely-dysfunctional family. At the end, I felt a warm fuzzy feeling in my cynical little heart. It tickled.
