I just got back from seeing Live, and OMG they were amazing. Sarah and I went with her coworker Greg and his fiancee Whit. Live played a couple of songs from each of their albums, with a heavy focus on Throwing Copper and their new album (note to self: coming out June 13). The new stuff is amazing. And it was amazing to hear the old stuff played live, because it's got even more energy and power. I wish I'd been paying enough attention to things and insisted on going to concerts when I was in high school, so I could hear these guys on their Secret Samadhi tour. At the time, their fan club was based in my town, even. There was no excuse! As a bonus this time, though, Ed's little brother Adam was touring with them as an extra guitarist. Amazing!
Complete list of songs played in the regular concert, out of order but by album:
Mental Jewelry:
"Pain Lies on the Riverside"
Throwing Copper:
"Selling the Drama"
"I Alone"
"Iris"
"Lightening Crashes"
"All Over You"
Secret Samadhi:
"Lakini's Juice"
The Distance to Here:
"The Dolphin's Cry" (Ed's mike had cut out for the first half of this one; Whit and I sang vocals for our section)
"They Stood up for Love"
V:
"Hero of Love"
Songs from Black Mountain:
(about 5-6 altogether, these are the titles I remember)
"The River"
"Mystery"
"Show"
After the "regular" concert, they came out for a 4-song encore and completely blew me away: "Overcome" from V, which was very moving, followed by "Beauty of Grey" from Mental Jewelry, and "Shit Towne" and "White, Discussion" from Throwing Copper. In the middle of "White, Disucssion", the lead singer (Ed Kowalczyk) engaged the crowd in a "We are -" "-Penn State" chant. He was all like "Holy shit, it works!" and even brought up someone from the front row of the floor to hear it (the guy was practically passing out with ecstasy!). It was kind of freaky, but distinctly Penn State at the same time. Whit and I decided that next time Live is in the area, we will be in the pit and we will leave our less-inclined partners at home or have them get sit-down seats.
Because of the emphasis on the old stuff, I knew most of the lyrics, and was shamelessly singing along throughout. Also screaming "woo!" a lot. I'm kind of hoarse now, and hope to not have trouble speaking tomorrow. I'm trying to keep things under control by not talking too much, drinking lots of water, and going to get a good night's sleep. Whit and I were quite the sight, though, being the two rabid fans in our section. A couple of guys were heckling from farther back, and I don't know quite why since they were still heckling after the song they wanted was played about other stuff.
The opening band,
Ari Hest was also quite good. Kind of folksy pop stuff from a very capable singer/guitarist, a drummer, and a bassist. Ari has an amazing voice, and I maybe should have tried to purchase the CD, but it was very important to us not to spend 2 hours getting out of the parking lot. He was a great opener, and may someday have the strength of following that Live has.
All in all, it was an amazing show, and I hope to see them again sometime soon! *Squee~!*
