let it be so

2007 is here. Not much has changed-- I'm still a freshman, still on break (but not for much longer), still me. Emily has returned from Mexico, which is good. I like seeing her, she tends to smooth my brother's rough edges.

Resolutions are futile, in my opinion. It's so easy to make a resolution and forget about it, or just to stop caring. Why even do it? The New Year isn't even that much of an occasion. It's a nothing day, dictated only by our mostly nonsensical calendar. Any other day could have been chosen for the New Year-- an equinox or solstice day would be more appropriate than a random one. So New Years' resolutions mean nothing; little wonder we don't keep them.

I like the concept, though. Instead of resolutions, though, I will simply state here what I would like my life to be as it progresses. If I can keep these goals in mind as goals, perhaps they will be easier to keep.

I want to laugh more. Life is short; spend it in good humor.
I want to see more of old friends. It's a shame to lose touch.
I want to feel productive. I cannot be happy while stagnating.
I want to learn interesting and useful knowledge. That's what college is FOR.
I want to be easy to like. It's always good to have more people to love.
I want to learn grace. Intelligence is great, but you've gotta have balance.

There are others, but these are the ones I feel most important. These are my goals, for this year and future. Not obligations, to 'keep', but objectives to attain.

Time to get to work.
