boredom in a can

Wow, I really need something else to do. I'm actually considering putting up personal details on this thing.

Obviously, the subject of the day happens to be boredom. There are a lot of different things which are said to differentiate man from the animals, but here's a concept-- I think man is the only animal to suffer from a need for variety. Boredom is a variant of that- having nothing to do except things that have already been done. We're constantly seeking new challenges, new experiences. This is how the entertainment industry makes is money- if it wasn't true, we'd all be watching reruns of the same old show for the rest of our lives, and nothing else. We do this sort of thing with food as well. How many times have you objected to someone's suggestion for what to eat because you "had that yesterday"? I'm sure there are some exceptions, but it's a common thing. Human need for variety has (of course) both good and bad aspects. It's driven us throughout human history and contributes to progress, but it's also the cause of boredom (which can cause a lag in productivity and such). Ultimately, I think we're much better off for it, but like all parts of human nature sometimes it's just as annoying as all hell.

Summer is just long enough that you start wanting to go back to school again by the time September rolls around- only to change your mind after, say, a week. Wonderful.
