Yuletide Reveal | Fic: You Can't Always Get What You Want

I'd completely forgotten to do this! My Yuletide fic for pixieboots was
You Can't Always Get What You Want
(Nightwing (Comics), DCU - Comicverse. Teen And Up Audiences. 4440 words. Tim Drake, Dick Grayson, Alfred Pennyworth. Gen really but features some unrequited pining over Dick by Tim.)
This could be the most inefficient way to solve a case Tim has ever seen, but he misses hanging out with Dick, so he isn't going to complain.

I'd included Nightwing (Comics) in my sign up at the last minute when I realised that one of the fandoms I was planning to offer would involve pretty much writing original fic and that was a scary, scary thought, and then promptly forgot about it. So the assignment was a bit of a shock, but seeing as Dick Grayson is the character I've written the most, how hard could it be?

Yeah.

So, I'm a little bit obsessive about canon and I love things to have a very strong basis on the comics, and I love playing around with all the contradictions and trying to make them fit and putting in tiny details. The very awesome prompt was for a moment of light in the darkness for Dick after he distances himself from the batfamily as his life falls apart during the series but even with my spreadsheet of Nightwing/Batman/Outsiders/Titans etc etc timelines, I just couldn't find a gap that I wanted to fill or that hadn't already been done a million times better.

It wasn't until I made the difficult decision to totally ignore canon and just write, that I got anywhere. I ended up being pretty happy with the story despite completely rewriting the ending on Christmas Eve, days after I'd uploaded the finished version, so that the case had more of a resolution, but it could've been a lot more polished. Batkids eating food and bantering and solving cases are pretty much my favourite things to write and I even managed to sneak in some Alfred ♥ so it worked out in the end.
