It begins - [Lost Humanity plot]

May 25, 2007 21:22

It happened in the middle of the night. There was no warning, fanfare, or loud noises, nothing that might wake either Enzan or Blues. The dim blue sparkle of pixelation that was the only sign of what was happening was hidden by the bed sheets, only becoming visible when it reached Blues's face. By then, it was too late. The sparkling stopped a few ( Read more... )

Enzan took his sweet time waking up. His eyes still closed as he rolled over to his side facing Blues' side of the bed. They didn't need to head into work that day so Enzan wanted to stay in a little late. A hand slipped up to try and hold onto Blues but found nothing.

Finding Blues' side of the bed just about empty got Enzan's attention. One eye opened and found that no one was laying there next to him and Enzan was not awake enough to notice what was on Blues' pillow.

He rolled onto his back and rubbed his eyes. He couldn't hear anyone moving around in the apartment but maybe Blues was trying to be quiet. Enzan sat up and slipped out of the covers, not looking back to Blues' side of the bed.

"Blues?" Enzan yawned and headed out of the bedroom. He peeked around corners and into every room. There was no scent of breakfast cooking, no sound of water running, it seemed Enzan was alone.

A little disappointed, Enzan headed back to the bedroom to change out of his pajamas. So much for being lazy!

He shut the door behind him and after taking off his night shirt, that's when Enzan finally spotted it. Blues' PET. It had been so long since Enzan had seen it. For a small moment he thought he might be dreaming.

Enzan slowly walked over feeling a bit anxious. He sat down, picked up the PET, and examined it. It seemed real. He pressed a button to take the PET off of sleep.

Waking up from being asleep and waking up from sleep mode were two very different experiences. As consciousness returned to Blues more quickly than he had become accustomed to, he blinked and shook his head. He felt disoriented and... odd. He had no other way to describe it. Something was off. Not... wrong, but definitely not as it should be. Why was he already on his feet? He looked at his hands. Why was he wearing his armor? He looked toward Enzan.

Why was he only visible through a computer screen?

"Enzan...sama?" he asked uncertainly.

Enzan's free hand quickly shot up to cover his mouth, he closed his eyes tightly. An odd choking sound couldn't be held back. It sounded like Enzan was torn between laughing and crying.

Had this all been some Nexus!LOL that lasted roughly a year?

"Blues. . ."

His surroundings were foreign and familiar at the same time, but slowly it dawned on him exactly where he was. Blues felt as though his blood should be draining from his face as he reached up to touch the screen.

But he didn't have blood.

"No..." He took a deep breath - it wasn't needed - and tried to steady himself against the rocking foundations of his world. "Enzan-sama... What- what happened?"

Enzan took a deep breath to calm himself down. His hand fell free from his mouth and he just held the PET in his lap, looking down at it.

"I don't know Blues." He bit his lip for a moment, "I woke up only to find you like this. Your PET."

Blues didn't say anything for a moment as thoughts and theories rattled around inside his head. Finally, he came to the same conclusion that Enzan had already arrived at. "Do you think this is the Nexus? Is this... simply an LOL that has finally worn off?" The thought pained him. He did not want to give up his humanity. Not now. Not after so long.

"I don't know." Enzan didn't want to believe that was the reason. He kissed two fingertips and lightly touched the screen of the pet.

Part of this still hadn't sunk in.

"I...we'll think of something." He tried to smile.

Blues raised a hand to touch the screen where Enzan's fingers met. Nothing. No sensation of warmth or pressure. Enzan was not here, not in the world of digits and data. Despite no longer having a heart, Blues felt something inside him squeeze tight.

"Yes." He drew himself up, trying to rally his composure - if not for his own sake, then for Enzan's. "Yes. We will think of something. Perhaps one of the others in the Nexus has technology we can use?"

Enzan blinked and then gave a smile. That lifted his spirits.

"Your right! I mean, how do the other Navis show up in the real world? There must me something!"

Enzan gripped the PET tightly, "I'll get dressed and we can go right away."

Enzan's smile and the hope of a soluation - Blues smiled in return. He had no idea how well the technology the other navis used simulated humanity, but it had to be better than being trapped in this box, unable to touch and comfort Enzan.

"Thank you, Enzan-sama."

He hoped they found someone soon.
