A win

I wanted to try something different with my Year 12 Information Technology class. They were scheduled to have a discussion/notes/etc class about Social and Ethical Issues surrounding Computer Games and the Internet. One of those "let's all be adults and talk about this" lessons the course writers include in order to get the course past certain people on the board.

So I set up the multimedia projector connected to my computer at the front of the class and opened a blank document. I was their note-taker for the lesson, and I would minute their discussions and print out the notes for them (notes they will have ultimately have created themselves) at the end of the lesson.

Then I said two words to act as a seed for the discussion.

“Steven Conroy.”

I’ve never typed so fast for so long before in my life. They were on-topic. They were erudite. They were debating points and evolving opinions. They wanted to continue the discussion into recess.

And they were passionate. Boy, were they ever passionate.

Half of these kids are old enough to vote in this upcoming election, and most of them are politically underdeveloped, making them perfect ‘single-issue’ voters. I have to wonder whether the Labor party realise just how much of the younger vote they may be losing through that one man?

Great lesson though. :)
