If I don't resign when I leave, under federal law, they can't fire me.
Other guys who have done this are technically given "Reserve Deputy" status. I keep my badge and my right-to-carry under HR218 and if I want to come back at any time, I'll have all kinds of seniority based on my hire date/commission number- all while being out of the county (and probably even the country). It worked out nicely for some guys during the first Gulf War. They came back after a year and immediately got promoted. We'll see how things work out.

In any case, good for you. I'm Canadian, but I've got nothing but respect for the U.S armed forces(your elected officals are another story).
The world needs more people with your conception of honor. Your situation just goes to prove that honor is its own reward.
