How do you know when a client has more money then sense? When they ask you to spec them a terabyte of space for their i-tunes. For those of you who aren’t computer literate… a terabyte is a thousand gigabytes which is a thousand megabytes which is a thousand kilobytes. In other words a lot of space. Of course I’m all up for that as this means with the VPN connection (tip top secure connection between my computer and their network) I can download lots of mp3s to my player… well when I get one.
This story happened before I joined. It was noticed that a clients back up was growing by a 100 meg a day which is quite a lot for our clients so some investigation was done to see what was causing this increase. It was finally tracked down to one of the directors who was using their internet connection to download lots of good old fashioned entertainment from www.bangbus.com. Now there is a matter of etiquette here involved. You can’t just come out and say to the client that the back up is getting too big because you are downloading lots of filth. I’m not sure how it resolved itself but it did stop though before that one of my colleagues, with the use of a VPN (tip top secure connection between his computer and their network) copied all the porn and burnt it to cd. Hey… free porn is free porn.
Windows has an ability to automatically download and install updates. Now this may sound like a good idea but not when you apply it to servers. The other day I was called out to a client site because for about a ten minute period during the morning their networked stopped working and then came back up again. After a little investigation I found that the server had downloaded an update and initiated a reboot all on its own. This is when auto download and install of updates is a bad thing.
I’m sure as time goes on their will be more.
