the little black dress

I don't know about you guys, but every once in awhile I'll be tuttering along and just kind of living day by day, and suddenly I have to do something like meet someone for coffee or have a discussion over lunch that makes me feel so grown up. I live most of my life pretty much as I always have, so it's always pretty startling.

Anywho, I have recieved an invitation to a not-really-semi-formal dinner thingy for a company Christmas party, and I was thinking about how women never really know what to wear to these things (at least, I don't). And then I started thinking about the stereotypical "little black dress" that supposedly every woman has in her closet somewhere for just such occasions: dates, funerals, officewear, parties, etc. And then I realized that it's time for me to officially find the little black dress, *my* little black dress, and I felt so adult. There aren't many times I feel particularly "womanly", but having a little black dress is one of those more minor rites of passage (at least, it is on TV) that tells you that you're a woman. And it startled me.

Yeah. See? This is exactly why you don't live in my mind. It's scary and confusing here . . . .
