Okay, now that I'm sufficiently calmed, I need to rant about this stupid book. I've just read 'Scrubbing in Maine', and I am truly disgusted. The author worked as a cleaning lady for Merry Maids, and the way she insulted the lifestyles of the people's homes she had to clean was thoroughly nauseating. She rants on and on about how these people have such ostentatious homes and have the gall to hire people to clean them, but she has no right. These people are not any worse because they've decided to hire people to perform a service- that's right, in the SERVICE industry. She claims that the only reason these people have all these nice things is because of the blood, sweat, and tears of the "worldwide working class". Are you for fucking real? You're rich, you have nice things, and just because you don't hire people to clean them for you does not make it any better, sweetie. The person who owns that big ass condo in Cape Cod has earned it (in most cases, anyway), and yeah, it's harsh, but it was your job to clean it! I'm not saying all of her ranting was not justified, because some of those people were truly appalling. What was worse, in my opinion, was the truly repellant behavior of Ted, the manager. He held little to no regard for the safety and well-being of his employees, and that was truly wrong. Perhaps Ehrenreich should have written an exposé on the Merry Maid franchise, not an egotistical rant about the way 'rich people' spend their money. And the fact that the people who she worked with don't resent the fact that they clean homes for those with more money; instead they aspire to reach that standing in life someday, just made her entire argument and opinion worthless. I am utterly...I don't even know...speechless now that I've let it all out.
