The Mystery of the Freezing Water

Uh...yeah. Okay, maybe it's a bit dramatic. Anyway, I do have a bit of a mystery on my hands. My papa keeps a jug of water in the refrigerator. However, lately it has been freezing. Not all the way, but enough to be annoying. Last night, when I poured out my cranapple juice, I noticed that it, too, had some ice in it. Not a lot, through ( Read more... )

The strangest thing is that none of the other drinks freeze. The pepsi doesn't. Nor do my brother's Mello Yello or this small bottle of water my papa has set out. So why does my papa's water freezes and my cranapple starting to, but not the others?

I was going to suggest that maybe the sodas have a higher freezing point than the water and juice, but you mentioned that the bottle of water doesn't freeze either. In that case, I have no idea. ^_^

I know very little about Science (through I have heard of that freezing point) so that tidbit is new to me. It may be the type of water that's in the bottle? I don't know if it's from our supply or from a store.

Anyway, my dad suggested we turn down the temp, which we did. We'll see if that is what's causing it. It may be that somehow the temp was pushed all the way.

Maybe it's because the jug doesn't have a cork in it? So that the corked bottles are better at isolating away from the cold?

Never heard of that, either. However, I doubt I could find a cork for this jug.
