A point of law - USA-style

Calling any US LJers - if a child of 12 in USA was found to be guilty of manslaughter (ie. killing someone but without malice aforethought) what would his punishment be likely to be?
I mean - do you have young offenders' places over there - would he receive help/counselling etc. Would he even be tried at all or would he just be placed in secure care because of his age? At what age does criminal culpability start in USA?

If anyone could help I'd be very grateful!
