The sun hit Arthur’s eyes and they fluttered open.

He groaned, closing his eyes and turned back over.  No way was he getting up yet.  His arm flopped expecting something to cuddle. His arm hit the mattress.  That something to cuddle was Merlin

Merlin… Where was Merlin? Probably getting breakfast.  He pulled the bedclothes up to cover his eyes, cocooned in comfort he was just dozing ff to sleep when he heard the bolts on the door open.  Merlin.  The clatter of the cutlery confirmed it.  Arthur didn’t move.

Merlin smiled.  He knew Arthur wasn’t asleep.  He was lucky it was Sunday.  “I know you’re awake,” Merlin said, a grin on his face. “You don’t have to pretend to me.”

Nothing.  Arthur heard Merlin set the tray down and turn to face the bed.  He was asleep.  He was aslee…

“Pendragon! Move!”

Arthur couldn’t help but sit bolt up right at this.  Merlin had just barked at him.  Barked!  He was about to open his mouth to say something but nothing came out.  He was too astounded to even speak.  Merlin, on the other hand stood there with a stupid grin on his face.  Idiot.

“Not nice, is it?”

Bloody Merlin ordering him around.  Idiot.

Merlin was surprised that shock tactics seemed to work on Arthur.  He made a mental note to himself.

Arthur just squinted at him.  He’d just realised what Merlin was carrying and it looked suspiciously like a book he’d seen when he was in Merlin’s room when he was searching the castle for the druid boy.

Arthur eyed it.  “What’s that?”  He asked.

Merlin looked at the book and to Arthur again. “What? This?”

“No, Merlin, the sheep behind you.”

Merlin made the slightest move to turn before he thought better of it.  He made it look like he was shifting his feet.  Arthur wasn’t convinced.  Inside he cringed for Merlin. So gullible it hurt.

Merlin grinned as he presented the book, flopping himself onto the bed.

“This,” he said proudly, opening it to a random page “is a book!”

“I can see that,” Arthur rolled his eyes.  “I mean what book is it?!”

Merlin’s face dropped slightly.  “It’s a spell book, you know, so I can teach you…” He fell silent as Arthur’s face drained of colour.    Merlin looked down as he always did when Arthur was yelling at him.  Arthur looked at Merlin, putting this index finger under his chin, forcing him them eye to eye.  Arthur, to Merlin’s surprise smiled warmly.  This wasn’t meant to happen, where be the yelling? Oh well!

“Thank you, Merlin.”   They kissed.  Merlin hadn’t been expecting that!

“Before we start doing this, do you think we could eat first? I’m starving!”

Merlin stood at the other end of the table, holding a goblet in one hand and a mirror in the other.

“Concentrate! If you can do it with a dagger you can do it with a mirror!”

Arthur pouted.

Merlin was so bossy, a perfectionist.  So much for being a servant, tyrant more like.  ‘Move this, Arthur.  Move that, Arthur.  Concentrate more. Now. Arthur come on! Do this, do that, nag nag nag!’ He was glad he wasn’t like that.

Arthur concentrated as hard as he could in Merlin’s direction.

Merlin shut his eyes and bit his lip in an attempt to not so scream in pain as his head hit the ceiling.  Arthur, royal prat he was, was doubled over on the floor.

Merlin’s cries of anguish were eventually answered as Arthur finally got it together after 50 failed attempts an hour later.

“That wasn’t funny!” Merlin chided.  “What if someone saw you?  What if someone saw ME?!””  This made Arthur crack up even more.

“Oh come on, Merlin! That was fun! I think I’m going to quite like having magic!”

Merlin couldn’t think of anything worse.  A royal prat with magic…maybe he should tell Gaius?  Before the prat did something really stupid, like painting the entire castle pink or something?

“Okay, let me try once more, I promise I won’t do what I did last time!”  Arthur begged, his eyes glinting.  Truth it he liked saving Merlin, how needy he’d looked, how desperate…

“Okay, just once more. If you screw this up I swear I’ll tell the king what you are.”  Merlin had a smile in his eyes.

Merlin prepared himself to be flung out the window.  He shut his eyes.

Instead of being shot out the window at an alarming speed, he was hovered on what felt like a cloud, propelled forwards, lifted over the table and landed in front of a very proud looking Arthur.  Stupid. Grinning. Prat.

“You did it!” Merlin yelled, giving Arthur a hug.  “Well done! There’s hope for you yet!”

Arthur was grinning madly to himself.  “I did it!”  He could do magic.  He felt the buzz beneath his skin.  He jumped around with Merlin, still embraced in a cuddle.

“I’m proud of you,” Merlin smiled, giving Arthur a kiss. “Who’d have thought?” He added in an excited squeal.  “The Crown Prince of Camelot being able to do magic…” His voice trailed off.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

The door slammed shut, heavy footsteps heading away from the chamber.  Arthur instinctively knew who it was.

“Did…. Did… you…?” Arthur asked, hoping against hope the answer would be a smile as he glanced at the door.  His eyes flicked back to Merlin.  The fear in Merlin’s eyes said it all.

Prince Arthur was just seen doing magic by the king.
